| cycling or jogging for fitness ? Hiya all Im just back from a five mile cycle ride (part of my regular fitness regime) and while pedalling along I got to thinking do I really need to cycle five miles three times a week and jog two miles twice a week or can I ditch the jog to spend more time on other exercise and training ? any suggestions ?

| How about swimming? It's kinder to the joints.

| trust me you dont want to see me in a pair of trunks lol , But it is a good idea Im just not allowed to go swimming with out the kids so it usually ends up just as a play session not proper exercise ![]()

| It depends what you want to get out of it. Five mile cycles and two miles of jogging aren't going to do anything fantastic for you, although something is better than nothing. Jogging isn't good for your joints as it has high impact areas (legs obviously, lol). Swimming, cycling etc are better due to the fact there is no impact (hopefully). If you want to seriously keep fit then you need to spend more time doing more. 10, 15, 20 mile rides are better, and the majority of people can easily accomplish 20 miles in 1hr 30mins, once they have there cycling "legs". ) the plan is to increase the distance 2 or 3 circuts probably its nice to be out on the bike instead of the exercise bike in the shed, A 2 mile run is all I can fit in my lunch break I may replace this with walking on the wifes new treadmill (watch tv at same time )Im not looking to do an iron man event or anything just supplement my other exercise to stay "archery fit"

| Stay with the biking but be warned it can lead to exactly the same 'buy nice new shiney light weight kit' that archery does.

| Its much better to be doing what you are than being a couch potato In fact you are being very sensible as it would appear you have decied to make use of the time available to you to improve/maintain your fitness. I'd have a look at the info on this website - I've pointed you at the fartlek pages as I think they may be use to you. This site has a very good reputation http://www.brianmac.demon.co.uk/fartlek.htm Fartlek can be applied to any training - swimming, running, cycling etc There's load of stuff on there though to help anyone make the most of their excercise routine. and yes IMHO keeping up a moderate to good level of fitness is beneficial to archery so its important to enjoy what you do and be able to fit it in to your schedule.
