Personally, I have always thought that in any sporting contest the defending champion should have an entry by right -or is that unrealistic?

I understand many organisers it is generally considered polite to offer to reserve a place for the winners before they run out. This is also a good way of making sure you get your trophies back.

That's what I call a pragmatic approach.

Actually, I agree that winners should be allowed to defend their trophies, but I suspect that not many tournament organisers take this into consideration. Most events, in my experience, work purely on a first-come basis - this is fine, if one remembers to get an entry in early, but I'm not that well organised.
