If you can shoot a 540 FITA 18m, it's worth entering.
540 wasnt good enough last year for the head to head.

Beg to differ... 532 was the cutoff last year for gents recurves. But that's not even what I was referring to. I'm just saying that people will enjoy competition at that level if they are capable of shooting a 540. They also stand a chance of having a good day and making the cut.

If you do go to the Nationals heres what NOT to do. In 2004 at the end of my first indoor season I booked in for the Nats mainly to try and pick up some tips from watching the top archers shoot. So off I went with my £185 bow and platinums (most of them were fairly straight). I was absolutely bowled over by Lilleshal and the whole experience of shooting in a top class tournament. Anyway I shot a 555 in the FITA and made the cut into the head to heads. I had never shot a head to head before but it seemed fairly straightforward with the ladies shooting first then the men (the only bad thing about Lilleshal is the PA system, I couldn't understand a word it said). I shot the first round h2h and won and I thought that the ladies would then shoot their second round next giving me ten minutes or so to go and have a ciggy, get a drink vissit the loo etc.
Can you guess whats comming? In the second round, because the number of competitors have been halved the men and women shoot together and I got back into the hall with the clock showing 45 seconds left to shoot!!!. I ran onto the line and probably broke the world record for speed shooting managing to get two arrows off before the buzzer went. I was up against one of the England team members but the amazing thing was that the two arrows I shot were perfect tens (total fluke) and he hadn't had the best of ends. I was only six points behind and over the next few ends I managed to claw back the lead, we went into the last end dead even and I thought I had cracked it and would get through. Needless to say my last three arrows were the worst I'd shot all day and I was beaten by a couple of points. I'm sure there is a moral to this story somewhere!!!

Lesson to be learned - make sure you can still shoot without a clicker because it gives you a little bit of a time advantage.

I'm not sure they were a total fluke. I think that for those two arrows you, by nature of the situation you were in, were in the exact frame of mind to shoot absolutely perfect shots. And for the last three, where you THOUGHT you would get through, those thoughts resulted in poor shots.

I'm desperately trying to get back to the way I shot when I first started, when I had no expectations, no history, no knowledge, just a burning desire to shoot perfect arrows - and it's really difficult to keep my mind out of it!

shooting with clicker or not. if you have a good solid technique you should come through your clicker within seconds anyway. We teach and practice this all the time at our county squad sessions. The main lose of time is at predraw and set up; not trying to get an arrow through your clicker.
