The New Team Round

I shot the GNAS Premier event on the weekend. Whilst I didn't do too well on the Saturday, I shot in the team event on Sunday. Our team was allocated to us based on the ranking list from Saturday. We all three shot worse on Sunday than on Saturday and ended up right down the rankings in 21st. But we had a few fortunate matches and managed to get through to the semi-finals and bronze match, placing 4th in the end. Not only did I enjoy the round but I am fairly sure everyone did. There was plenty of cheering and encouragement from the crowd and archers alike (as well as a lot of goading towards opposing teams).

What interests me is that this is the only tournament of its kind I know of in the UK. I'd really like to see another FITA 720 with team H2H where archers can choose their own teams. Otherwise, there is no chance for UK archers (other than those competing internationally) to break team round world records or even to practice for this round if they do happen to compete internationally.

The problem I can see is a team like Roy Nash, Larry Godfrey and Alan Wills coming, who would probably flatten opposition. But it would be worth going just to have the chance to beat them!

Sounds like a good idea Grant, the Premier event team shoot is great fun and I'm sure that a 'serious' version would attract a fair few archers. The only hurdle would be finding someone to organise it.
I wouldn't worry about the likes of Roy, Larry, and Alan sending a team (what about Simon Terry anyway?). I think it would attract more competitors the prospect of shooting against an unofficial GB team, and anyway I found out Saturday that Roy for one isn't unbeatable.

You never know.
At the Nationals this year my team knocked out a big name team and then tied in 2/3 ends with a team featuring Dudley and Freeman (that other end though cost us)
Matchplay is great like that.

the premier event was so much fun; grant you had christina (she is very good)

i was just pleased that i didn't hold my team back that much although i did shoot several whites (damn the inconsistency of my technique right now )

watching dr mundon shoot is always fun too!

I've thought about the team events too - but couldn't really think of a way to get it done easily, most clubs don't have enough to make a good team (especially a women's team) and most people aren't prepared to travel that much. Could the rounds be done at county level, or perhaps a few clubs could band together and there be knockouts within a county? GNAS have of course introducted the team indoor as well as the one at the premier event, but that's a mixed event.
BUTC (a university event) was fun but it wouldn't have been so good if the one time i did it my team had gone out in the first round, as half are bound to do. I've noticed a tendancy for those who go through a bit randomly to love h2hs!
And basically I shoot just the same (although maybe a bit quicker) whatever the event - archery is still in my opinion an individual sport, even if the rounds are for a team.

The only problem I can see with other 720's doing a team round for "proper" teams is that you could end up with very few teams when you split the field in to ladies and gents. Unless of course you have a truely enormous number of entries. Just to have 1/8 eliminations in each class, seniors only, means a field of 64 teams or 192 entrants. Of course you could split the event over 2 days.

I think the way they run the event at the Premier is one that could be adopted in other tournaments. At least that way anyone can enter the 720 and you will have a team to shoot in. It would be great to be able to enter as a team but I think the limited space makes it a very awkward thing to achieve.

I thoroughly enjoy the team event and to be honest that was one of the main reasons I entered the shoot.

I was thinking it would be better that people don't have to use their club/county/region to make up a team - they could choose whoever they wanted!
I like the way that the GNAS premier is run but would prefer to select my own team. Those entrants who still wanted to shoot could quite simply tick a box on the entry form that says "Please allocate me to a team". Otherwise the tournament organiser could just put up a target list for the next day and entrants could fill it in themselves. Each target of 3 archers would be a team. There'd be things to iron out but I think it would be interesting to see how it worked.
