2007 Yorkshire Field Championships at risk

At present (13 July 2007) no date or venue has been arranged for the 2007 Yorkshire Field Championships.

Contact has been made with a number of clubs, but as yet we have not had any offers to host the Championships this year. Unless a club steps forward in the next few weeks to host the 2007 Championships, the Committee will be left with no alternative other than to cancel the event for 2007.

If this is sadly the final position, the Committee and Field Officer will do all they can to ensure the Championships take place in 2008.

If any YAA-affiliated club is interested in hosting the shoot in 2007 or 2008, please make the YAA Secretary or any member of the Committee aware of your interest.

Tim Mason, YAA Public Relations Officer

Wyke's a target club though, I believe? I was looking into what would be involved if my own club were to stage it:
  • Locate a suitable piece of woodland
  • Get permission from the owner to use that woodland
  • Agree rent or lease terms (or conditions for free use)
  • Close off public access (at least temporarily) and access by livestock or large wildlife
  • Map thoroughly
  • Arrange storage - may require a steel container
  • Obtain and store 24 foam bosses for course, several for practice field, plus spares - say 36 bosses
  • Plan the outline of the course
  • Plan the practice field
  • Make footpaths
  • Cut and reinforce steps
  • Prepare a suitable parking area
  • Prepare a suitable camping area
  • Plan the course in detail
  • Get target faces, target pins, cardboard backing, tarpaulin, ropes, posts, marking tape, pegs, number boards, direction signs, safety signs, walkie-talkies, tents, marquees, tables, generators
  • Get medals and trophies
  • Arrange catering
  • Arrange first aid
  • Get volunteers for field party
  • Book judges
  • Book Lady Paramount and/or Lord Patron
  • Produce and distribute entry form
  • Publicise
  • Measure and mark out the course
  • Measure and mark out the practice field
  • Set up the registration area, awards area and catering area
  • Clear lanes
  • Clear excessive undergrowth and overhang
  • Place posts for butts
  • Place pegs, number boards, direction signs, marking tape
  • Place bosses and target faces
  • Place seating if possible
  • Obtain record status, arrowhead status, selection status
  • Test-shoot the course
  • Modify and re-test as necessary
  • Hire toilets
  • Produce and place signposts to event
  • Deal with entries and enquiries
  • Prepare target list and score cards
In short, a ton of work and £3000-£4000 expenditure. Might be do-able for 2008 given help with the financing, but no chance in what's left of 2007. The only practical option in the next few months is if one of the YAA-affiliated field clubs offers, but I think they're all booked up for the rest of the year.
