so why did you retire?

LMP: we had the same problem at the EMAS DFS last week. A huge downpour at the end of 3rd distance. The judges wanted to abandon, but several archers were on for MBs. Someone had the sense to call a vote of the archers, who all voted to continue, so the judges had the good grace to make a quality call and give the archers what they wanted. The shoot went on (and the weather improved)

The problem is that most "waterproof" jackets are 1) too baggy in the sleeves and body, 2) depend upon the Goretex or similar system properties of "breathability" and when constricted by either chest guard or Tubigrip/arm guard seem to 'leak'. The Endura Jacket is not cheap at between £134-150 but by the end of a whole morning of virtually continuous rain I was dry and more to the point comfortable.
The problem with most waterproof jackets is that their breathability relies on movement of water vapour through a membrane or coating. So unless the wearer is warm, and the outer fabric treatment still causes the rain to form droplets, then any water vapour simply condenses on the inside of the jacket = you feel wet and cold. Covering the outer fabric with tubigrip or a chest guard will tend to trap water next the outer fabric preventing the rain forming droplets and therefore decreases the breathability of the fabric. The outer fabric treatment will gradually wear off, usually by extended rubbing - the sort of thing an chest guard might do over time. The treatments can be replaced using some of the wash in treatments (e.g. Nikwax or Grangers).

There are 'waterproof' systems that do move liquid water from the inside to the outside. These include Paramo (Nikwax Analogy) and Buffalo Systems, which will eliminate condensation more effectively than the membrame system. Hence you feel drier.

As you say DeadEyeDoc, the key is feeling comfortable. Comfortable = warm and dry = safe.

These garments aren't cheap, but they do tend to last a long time.
I can vouch for the Paramo system, having used it for over 10 years. They are guaranteed for life and when maintained with the Nikwax treatments are as effective now as when new. Only fault I have with them is that don't wear out - so it's hard to justify buying a new design or colour when you fancy a change .

I wish I'd stayed in bed today!!!

I shot all day with no scope as it took umbridge at the rain yesterday and retired!! This didn't help as my head was already up my butt!! I also had issues with my peep not turning at one point so much so I called equipment failure and all but through the bow at hoyt hooligan to fix! I missed MB by 3 points - typical!

Congrats to Jimmy though... apparently she got her 3rd MB today

I have it on very good authority that Bronte will be a sundrenched affair. I'm not coming all that way to spend my very short summer holiday shooting in the rain!!

Masochism is not something I enjoy ... read what I said in the original post. Another problem is that one can scarcely see the target with rain pouring down the lenses of one's glasses (in spite of suitable headgear), which, of course, is a distinct disadvantage! Don't tell me to get laser eye surgery at my age, and I cannot wear contact lenses.
Once in a while it would be good to go home feeling that one had achieved something worthwhile and 'enjoyed oneself'. I live in hope... well, Yorkshire really.
