Manchester University may not have an archery club, but there are plenty of clubs around Manchester he could practice at. PM what area he's in and I can send you a couple of suggestions.

I have done that myself many times, it isn't pleasant. I haven't ever done it with my new bow (Hoyt Vectrix XL), forgetting the claims about accuracy the string stopper definately stops the string hitting your arm!
