Thanks for that Marcus. I can just imagine the archers at full draw; realise there's a photo opportunity and all face the camera and smile! Click-ten! heehee. Ten, yes. Right target; no!

You're right, but those were done with a cameraphone (think 0.5 seconds shutter lag)

Will take my DSLR to the club next time I get a chance & see if I can catch me a compound arrow in flight.

C'mon everyone else, where are your photos?

Photographing arrows in flight is something I have thought about before but I decided to get the shots I was really after would be a bit too much of technical nightmare although I might settle just for some slightly blurry arrows as they will have moved a few mm even if i max the shutter speed at 1/8000th.

I had been considering setting up some sound triggered flashes to get a perfectly frozen arrow in flight in sharp focus about 1~2m out of the bow with the bow & archer nicely oof in the background. In the end i was a bit too lazy, did the maths and decided to totally freeze an arrow at full speed would be quite a task.

Perfectionism can be a bit of a curse at times

You can just about see it as it heads to the target... dull day so shutter was a tad slow.

Marcus,

Since I know you are a stickler for accuracy and hate taking things for granted...

As far as I can tell, your using the fact that the arrow from Erika's bow isn't bending much as evidence that her bow is well tuned. I've no doubt the bow IS well tuned, Erika's release is brilliant, etc.

However, all the slow motion footage I've seen shows arrows shortly after leaving a bow flexing first one way, then the other, until such time as they straighten out fully, several metres down range. Accordingly, in between being fully flexed one way and fully flexed the other, there must be a point a which the arrow is perfectly straight, even from a horribly tuned bow.

...this being the case I can't help wondering if the shutter clicked just as the arrow was 'mid' flex, thereby giving the impression of straight arrow flight, when in fact what was captured was simply the 'mid flex' instant.

Just a thought.
