RE: Club Badge

The Latin text means "a cursed hunger for gold"

RE: Club Badge

Actually "Sacra" more often means "Blessed" or "Holy".

Below is our (Bowmen of Adel) rather traditional offering. On our shirts, our club name is embroidered in "Olde English" script, which once led to me being asked what the "Bobmen of God" were.

[In case you wondered, there is a blue ring between red and black!]

Not being a Latin scholar, I've no idea - I don't holiday in ancient Rome, so I never saw the point. "Dos cervezas, por favor" is about the extent of my linguistic talent!
I think the use of the phrase is a slightly tongue-in-cheek play on the original quote which I believe is attributed to Virgil. He was criticising man's greed so perhaps it was something to do with his tone of voice that got lost in translation!

RE: Club Badge

Ah Latin!
Reading my previous posting, it did feel like an old schoolmaster. Sorry. But I would rather our hunger for gold is a sacred one, rather than cursed - even though it does feel like that at times.
And just wait until Stalybridge (I think it is) put their motto up!

Very nice collection you have there. At our committee meeting this evening, we have decided to have some special lapel badges made. It could be a few weeks before they get to our club, I have a couple on order for My Good lady & myself.

RE: Club Badge

At a guess, I'd say "mente et manu" means "with mind and hand", or something similar. Very appropriate for archery, and in the right order.
