You're right about the expense. But golf balls ARE (were?) less expensive than arrows. Morphy Mick told me that he had played Golf Archery somewhere in Yorkshire against one of the local golf clubs.

Golf archery seemed to very popular in the 1950's & 60's in Yorkshire. The Bronte Archers' scrapbook has several newspaper clippings from that era recording victorys by Bronte Archers against local golf clubs.

And I'm not suggesting that Morphy Mick played in the 1950's!
