Promoting archery in film

There's a new movie soon to be released that's not about archery, but has some funny archery scenes.

Called The Weatherman, starring Nicholas Cage, it's about a TV weatherman in Chicago whose personal and professional lives are simultaneously falling apart. On a regular basis, the viewing public pelts him with drinks and street food as a protest against a poor forecast.

On the home front, his chubby little daughter is trying (and failing) to find a hobby. She choses archery, at which she isn't very good. He, however, picks it up quite nicely and uses it to make a statement.

"People don't throw things at me any more. Maybe because I carry a bow around."

It looks like a very funny, touching movie and I encourage you to watch a trailer, if you haven't seen it yet.

Not all Americans are on the Dark Side

I just want to know why I can't find any place like that to shoot here. It's either real or plastic animals.

RE: Promoting archery in film

Looks like he might be getting serious about it, too:

`ROBIN HOOD' CAGE MASTERS THE BOW + ARROW

NICOLAS CAGE has developed a passion for archery after discovering he's a bow-and-arrow natural while preparing for his new movie THE WEATHER MAN.

The movie star took his first archery lessons so he'd look authentic as a TV weather man with a love for the ancient art - and he discovered he has a natural talent for the sport.

He says, "There aren't too many things that I will come out and say I'm a natural at and when I started doing archery, that was the first time I really found something, besides acting, that I thought, `Maybe I can do this.'

"The archery in the movie was mine. I did all that. I'm happy to say that. I really enjoyed it. I'd like to continue doing it when I get some time."

Cage isn't the only movie star who has discovered a natural talent for archery - THELMA + LOUISE star GEENA DAVIS was once ranked one of America's top 20 female archers after mastering the sport a decade ago.

Maybe we need to get them signed up on AIUK. We could have a "chat with the stars" evening

I'd be interested to know if archery today is generally on the up, about the same or in decline. Seems like almost every other blockbuster of recent years has featured trad achery to some extent - Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, King Arthur, House of Flying Daggers (OK not exactly a blockbuster) and the latest Narnia. Does this mass media exposure promote archery? Don't wish to be negative but I can't say I've noticed that many new faces at the clubs I attend. All of these films show archery in a warrior/hunter context not as a sport. Maybe Nick Cage's new film may well promote a balanced and positive view of sport archery but the media usually needs a more glamorous and exciting hook.

Received my new issue of 'Bow International' yesterday and there's an article saying that archery is on the increase, partly due to LOTR and partly due to Allison Williamson's success at the olympics, I think it mentions something about more funding being available since the olympics too. Apparently membership numbers are at an all time high and new clubs are springing up all over the place.

About time a great sport got the status and recognition it deserves, IMHO !!!!
