Question Arrows to stiff.....???

While I'm awaiting for my compound to be returned I decided to tune my recurve. I was unable to get my unfletched arrows within about 25cm of my fletched arrows.

They were landing about the same height, but way off to the right, being a lefty the guide suggested that they were too stiff. After ajusting my button, moving the button, changing the bracing height, and my anchoring point, 25cms was the closest I could get at 20yds. (without the button they weren't even on the boss!!)

I'm holding about 29lbs on my fingers, and about 26" draw and am shooting 1616 XX75s (which is the recommended shaft). Any suggestions???

Just to be fun, I also took advantage of the lack of wind to do a walk back test, arrows more or less in a straight line down from 5yds-40yds.... which would suggest they were fairly ok.....

Help!!!

Based on that I'd say you have no problem!

The walk back shows that you have straight arrow flight, what more could you ask for?

Kae.

That's what confused me, the arrows flying straight, but obviously not tuned. So I can't be getting the best out of the setup. Can I?? *sigh* my darkside bow is so much easier to tune.....

This is an interesting question. I looked at the Easton arrow selection charts in the latest Quicks catalogue and found an apparent discrepancy. The main chart shows that the arrow shaft group to use would be T1 (and almost into T2). T1 includes 75 shaft with specification 1616 - excatly as you describe.

However, the chart on the previous page suggests group Y6 and this one has 75 shafts of 1516! The inference here is that 1616's might be a bit stiff.

Your question said that your draw was 'about' 26". If it's any shorter, this may mean that your arrows are a bit too stiff.

Finally, what weight piles are you using? Light piles would make an arrow behave as if it were stiffer.

When I shot recurve I always preferred an arrow that was a bit on the stiff side, as I found it grouped a bit better! With longbow I was told that spine doesn't matter as long as you've got enough of it!

Getting arrows to fly on a straight flightpath is not quite the same as getting the bare shaft to land in the group. When the arrows match the speed of your bow, the bare shaft should land close to the group. If they are a bit stiff, or soft, they may still fly along a straight path but they could be fishtailing , specially in the first few yards or more. The pile weight will keep the front more or less on a line while the tails wave about. It would be better to get better flight especially in wind where the fishtailing can produce variations between the shots.

That's what I was worried about.

The points are the nibb points that they put in when I got the arrows at WAS, so I suspect not overly heavy.

Thanks for the advice guys, I shall play about a bit.

thanks geoff - you know when something thats been eluding your full comprehension is phrased in such a way it actually 'clicks' ?

now then - a single fishtail motion close to the bow - i assume a further tinkering (given that arrow spine and bow speed are fairly close) with button pressure one way or the other is the remedy ?

If your arrows are too stiff the only cure is to up the poundage or get new arrows. If you 'tune' out the problem you're just disguising it not fixing it. Also spray for contact just in case it's just contact.

The primary reason for this is the different assumptions made by Easton, the Target chart assumes good technique, medium to high performance limbs and non stretch strings, while the Youth chart tends more to the beginner with club kit (or at least that is what I've been informed). So in general the Youth chart will suggest a whippier spine.

On a slightly different note; have the recommended spines been changed over the years as bow / archer performance has improved? If anyone has any old (10-15 years) selection charts I'd be interested to know.

Now where is the smiley for I'll get my anorak?
