International Limb Pockets

Hi All, I'm sure there is an answer. My club is still shut so no one to ask until Sunday so I hope someone can answer a stupid question. I have been learnig on a KAP Suprise and have bought a second-hand Hoyt GM riser and a set of Petron limbs, from someone else, believing that they will work together. The limbs arrived in the post this morning (many thanks Dave) and I quickly tried them together before coming to work Bow goes together well enough, but there is quite a lot of movement of the limbs in the pockets, but not having put together a bow with international limbs I don't know if this is expected, if I'm missing something with the riser, or if I'm missing something all togther (like a brain). Looking into the limb pockets I can see an oblong shaped metal socket and the adjusting screw, the limbs seem to go all the way home, with the sprung pin in the right place, but grabing the limb tips and moving them in the direction of the shot I get a lot of movement at the limb base. Help please.

The bottom edge of the limbs should have a semi-circular (ish) cut out and about 3 inches towards the tips a metal skirted spung pin. If this is the case they will suit the riser you have

If I understand correctly, the tips move forward, but not backward..... The tension of the string will hold the limbs in place.

I'm not sure how much movement should be normal on a GM - there may or may not be a method of adjusting the limb pockets for weight/tiller - which will change the amount of movement you see.

T.

I know this may sound silly, but did you string the bow? My limbs always seem a bit of the loose side before I string it. Then seems to shoot ok. The string jams the bottom of the limb outwards from the riser against the adjustment screw.

Sponge.

Hi thanks for the replies, I did string the bow and the tension did stop the movement. I wondered though if the limbs would "rattle" during the shot. I have every confidence that the limbs and riser would work together but being a “newbbie” and having already made mistakes, (didn't realise I was a lefty and jumped in and bought a right hand bow) was just needing some reassurance. Thanks

Cestria, Don't worry, first time I strung my bow and gave it a twang, the crack noise freaked me out (and I had been warned about it).

I was really proud that I had set up my bow for the first time until I had is pointed out that my string was on upside down.

As for been a lefty, well, I was in a group of 9 beginners, and 5 of us werre left handed. The club didn't have enough bows (especailly for big blokes). I now have a cheap sight with the scale upside down becauase of being a lefty. Learn to shoot right handed if you can.

Sponge

Hi Sponge, Thanks for that, like I said just a little reassurance. The left eye dominance thing did come as a surprise, on our course of five there were two of us lefties. After some initial concerns I did as the coach suggested and give it a try with the promise I could go to right hand if I wanted to. Now after three months I've got to say it feels a little strange picking a bow up with my left hand now. I suppose having the bow in my right hand (my strongest by far) gives the bow more support, it’s working for me at the moment

My Petron S3 Carbons are much looser than my W&W Synerzy's on my risers. In fact, my Synerzys are a little too tight on my Samick Mizar.

I wouldn't let it worry you, all bar one of my PB's were set with the Petrons.

Good hunting, Ian.

yeah the GM does make a cracking noise when you first put it together but thats just the limbs settling in. by the sounds of it your bow will be fine. all Int. limbs move when just slotted in, and as mentioned abgove it is the tension that holds them in place.

enjoy the GM, is a great bow and one which i shot for many a year. if you need any more info feel free to give me a pm.

Al

Hey! Glad to hear there are some more lefties out there! (you are all happy members of the 'Buy before you try brigade'). Funny you should menton limb pocket noise - I bought a PSE X-Factor last year and iftted it with WinEX limbs (the PSE has a simple external limb bolt and dovetail, not a pocket as such) - that particular combination was very noisy (it had a crack like a gunshot) - we tried everything - brace height, different arrows, varying the poundage. it took a couple of us at the club to crawl over it screwing bits of rubber into every nook and cranny to eventually discover that the limbs themselves were slapping against the bolts - a couple of short damper rods (W&W Fomax) fixed to the limb bolts did the trick. I always wondered if it was the external limb mountings that made the noise worse.
