string picture

there seems to be two camps for aligning the string picture with a recurve setup; 1. to the side of the sight ring and 2. aligned with the riser.
I can shoot just as badly either way and was wandering which is the preferred or recommended alignment method (and why).

Personally I always align my string to the left of the sight ring, but that's just me.

I would personally recomend aligning the string with your sight, as this is where you are looking (or at least looking through) rather than trying to focus on different points of the bow.

Apparently there are many dependent on nationality! I seem to remember reading it in one of the standard tomes on archery (can't just remember which one). Don't suppose it matters so long as you do the same thing each time.

I think its in Rick McKinneys book that he shows the different string pictures people use?

I cover the sight window area of my riser with the string, as long as you can check it easily and it is the same each time I'm not sure it matters exactly where it is.

Personally I've always gone with lining up with the top limb bolt, so the centreline of the riser really.

The lining up with the sight ring thing has always concerned me a little? How does that affect things when you change windage for example?

What would be the point of changing for windage if you didn't adjust your string picture as well?

if the string (picture) effectively acts like a back sight then it DOES need to stay consistent surely ? that way any adjustments for windage would work properly effectively altering the angle between the arrow and the line of sight

thinking about it - maybe that only works if your string picture relies on referring to the sight ring in some way ?

I've just had a problem myself. I resolved it (in My own head at least) by assuming the the string should be inline with the centre line of the limbs (this is how I start my bow tuning). The centre shot puts the arrow just outside the string, so set the sight ring directly above the arrow. This puts the "string picture" just inside the sight ring AND in the centre of the bow. During the draw and anchor try to see the string in this postion every time, the target and sight ring can then be aimed together and the shot executed.

Worked for me
