Left handed effects

Hi all.

My missus shoots left handed, I've been helping her to retune her bow (hoyt eclipse) as she's recently picked up some used A/C/C's and needed some adjustments making.

Her arrows came with quick spin vanes fitted which have now been replaced but it got me to thinking about arrow rotation. I know some vanes such as spinwings and k-vanes come in a left handed variant, but quick spins don't so if she were to shoot with them attached the arrows would rotate clockwise (viewed from behind).

I'm interested to know if this would have any negative effect for a left handed archer and I'm pondering the following questions...

Assuming that all arrows released have a certain amount of natural rotation (or do they?), do arrows released by a left handed archer naturally rotate anticlockwise with non-biased vanes?

What causes an arrows natural rotation (with non biased vanes)?

If a left handed archer shot with right handed spin wings (or vice versa) would it cause a problem with arrow flight?

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Paul.

Hi
I too am a leftie, and over the months have tried different types of fletching, including Quickspin and Spin Wing.

I bought a second hand set of ACE with righthand Spin Wing and managed to loose one or more fletching per arrow very quickly, I changed these to lefthand and didn't have any more problem.

I did try Quickspin, I didn't have the same problem with these as I did the Spin Wing, so came to the conclusion that the spin induced made for better clearence, or the fact that the Qickspin are more "rubbery" gave them more durability. I did however find that the Quickspin where a pain to flecth, as the little kicker meant the fletch didn't sit in the jig very well.

I now use lefthand Flonite K-vane fletches and find these very hardy and have no problems fletching them.

Interesting, I wonder why the clockwise rotation would cause more damage as you'd think rotating the arrow in either direction would bring a vane in contact with the button / rest.

I tried spinwings on my own setup (right handed) and also found them to be very susceptible to damage. Like you I now use K-Vanes (spin vanes) and find them to be a lot easier to apply and much stronger. I just got back from a quick practice this morning, one arrow went into the boss up to the nock. Apart from a few creases the k-vanes survived being pulled back out.

just glue a match to the in side of the vain holder this will give clearence for the little rubber thingy and hold it tight

I think the answer to the rotating question is that it is all but impossible to get the vanes fitted without some slight bias. Any bias will cause the arrow to try to rotate. I think that even bare shafts will rotate. It could be that the flex in the arrow causes the rotation, perhaps some of the energy that causes flex gets converted to rotation as flex decays. It may be a bit like plucking a string. It starts by vibrating forwards and backwards then slowly changes direction into side to side etc.
