Target Material

HI all, IM new here so be gentle with me

I live in the Highlands, nearest club 70 miles away. I have contacted the club about joining, but waiting for them to give me a date for my training sessions to start etc.

I have a 25" winstar riser & short win & win challenger limbs, giving a 66 inch bow with a 26 lbs pull @ 28".

Owing to the distance of my nearest club, I want to have a target boss for practicing nearer home. I still plan on going to the club on a regular basis, but I want to enter as many competions as possible next year so I will need to practice pretty much every day. "Its the taking part that counts"!!

What are the best target bosses made of? Straw or Foam?

Layered foam targets are very good. The danage foam ones are good too. Straw can be very hard when new and needs to be kept fairly dry, but it still makes a good boss. If the boss needs to be put away after every session, and you want a full size one, Danage are slightly easier to handle, straw can be managed alone, layered foam needs some form of carrier, like a sack truck.
In windy conditions, the danage can be rather light and requires good ropes.
I think , that this looks like there is no clear winner; depends on circumstances.
I shoot indoors at layered foam, hung from the beams. The weight helps and the layered foam is easy for me to repair.

good answer Geoff.... but I would recommend that ANY target is tied down, not worth losing any arrows to a fallen over target!!

I would recommend all targets are tied down, too. The extra bit for Danage targets is because, being light, they act like a sail and will move around, (rather than fall over), unless they are held down really well. I was a bit vague on that point.

Hiya. Where are you in the Highlands? Who's your nearest club?

I have a layered foam target that takes an 80cm face and i works really well, water resistant, easy to carry and very good at stopping arrows.

IM in Lochcarron ( north west coast ), My nearest club that IM aware of is near Inverness which is approx 70 miles from me.

We have plenty of space around here to practice, I just need something to shoot at. Water resistant would be useful as it rains up here about 340 days a year " well it seems like that"!

Cool

I practice shooting into a foam boss, they are light weight stop arrows well and much easier to draw your arrows from.
Ithink foam would be a better bet for you as straw bosses are more prone to soaking up all that water!

Personally I would go for foam targets as well.

Layered foam are ok, but the Danage butts are best IMO.

More expensive, but last a very, very long time.

Kae.

cardboard bales

I go to the local petrol station and get their boxes which they bale for recycling. it makes for a great target if ye have a water proof bit of plastic to put over it when its raining. i just leave it out in the field like that so theres no lugging it about but the best thing about it is its free!
