fat v thin arrows indoors

hi
i would like to ask your opinion on useing fat or thin arrows indoors
i know that fat arrows indoors are slower so more accurate on the smaller shorter target. but i have found that as my grouping improves some arrows are starting to deflect into 9s and 7s.
thiner arrows do not deflect as much as fatter arrows but are less accurate

please give me your verdict

Fatter arrows only really work better if you shoot on triple spot faces otherwise you end up with rick'oshea's like you described. Also you need to be able to shoot the fatter arrow as well as thinner arrow. I have had little luck getting fatter arrows to tune properly. Hopeing some fatboys will work this time round.

I shoot the same arrows indoors as out. As has been said, fat arrows are only useful on three spot faces, else you can't manage to get them all in the 10 ring. There is one person at my club shooting the fattest arrows possible indoors (although he doesn't group well enough for it to really matter) but I think they'd probably take out the entire centre on a Portsmouth face.

When I was part of the dark side I use to shoot the fattest allowed arrow. I had a bet I could beat Terry courses record of most faces used in one portsmouth. I did not beat him. I got through 7 faces in 5 doz.

I'm thinking the same question, ive been shooting ACC's outdoors and no longer own any Ally Arrows as i sold them with a package and they were too short.

Im now thinking of 2 options,

1 - buy some platnum XX75's for the indoor season again

or

2 - Use my ACCs indoors and treat myself to some NAVS or ACE's next summer?

I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO ARGHH

I like Fatboys. I have just bought another dozen on Ebay. Yes I get through faces but score quite well. They are cheaper than my outdoor arrows.

When I first started in this game, at the start of the indoor season most archers changed from thin carbons to fatter ally's. EXCEPT for one guy who was easily the best Recurve archer in the area (numerous county records and one World Masters record). One day I plucked up the courage to ask him why he didn't change arrows for indoors like most of the rest, surely fatter arrows were better line-cutters than the Aces he used. He looked at me and said yes, you have a better chance of cutting the line with a fat arrow "but I dont aim at the line, I aim at the bit in the middle." He also went on to say that the real reason he shot Aces indoors was because there was no need to change anything on his bow or to re tune it and he didn't have to get used to the different 'feel' of the shot. He also thought that using a fast arrow with a flatter trajectory gave a smaller differnce in the impact point due to the power put into the shot (we all have 'weak shots').

Well, I decide to do what he did and have never regretted it during my time with a Recurve, most of the County records are still held by fast thin arrows (except they have different initials on them).

It's a different story with compound, the tiny ten ring and the fact that (hopefully) most of the time we shoot on three spot faces makes it almost manditory to shoot the fattest arrow you can.

Slower does not equal more accurate.

As Frangilli points out in his book, a poor shot with an aluminium arrow from a recurve will tend to drop further. Recurve archers are better off sticking with lighter arrows, whereas compound archers can get away with aluminiums as their bows have the power to fling them fast.

The ideal for a recurve archer indoors is a light, fat shaft, and there are a few carbons on the market that meet this criteria.

Exactly. I shot a 588 pompy with ACE's in 1999. Incedently I was 15 and wone the national indoor champs (junior). Hence why Im going to Fatboys. Hopeing the lighter (than my x10's) shaft will help.
