| 1 or 2 short rods I note that most recurves use two short rods in their set up as indeed do I, is this just because everyone else does or does anyone shoot only one and if so which side? At present I shoot with two because that seems to be what everone else does. Is there any benefit from only using one? |

| The majority of recurve archers will use short rods (twins) from a vee bar to balance the long rod. The stabilisation system (which can be all sorts of combinations, including extenders, top and bottom rods, etc. is a very personal choice and the dynamics of stabilisation are (according to experts such as Steve Ellison) quite complex. Hanging only one side rod from a recurve will typically tilt the bow to one side, which is not usually desirable, and very rarely seen. However, it is more common on compounds, where a short single side rod is sometimes used to balance the weight of the sight on the other side. Steve Ellison has published a couple of articles on stabilisation, which are available as downloads (sorry I can't find the link but a Google search should locate them).

| With V bar & twins a recurve archer must use two rods for bow balancing. Only way to use a single rod is as a backweight (bushing on reverse side of riser). Backweights have very much gone out of fashion (and rightly so IMO) except in the US. Think (?) that only US manufactured recurve bows now include a backweight bushing so not a lot a choice anyway. If your draw weight is high enough combined with long draw length then may need both V bar/extender/twins AND a backweight. Marco Galliazo's rig at Athens was set up like this.

| I have a slight variation on the v-bar & twins in that I have slightly more weight on the left to balance the bow.

| A guy in our club, shooting an Expert, bought a 41" Beiter long rod after trying every configuration of twins and long rods at C.B.A. in Guisborough. After shooting them in the shop he said that the single long rod was far superior to everything he had tried and his bow felt smoother and fell forward in a straight line! As someone said, stabilisation is a personal thing. The only drawback, he can't get the rod in his case!! |
