First Bow bought - now what?

Hey Guys,

Been lurking around for a while and now in a position to join in

Been shooting since the new year and have just received my own bow (Hoyt Gold Medallist with Kap Challenger Limbs) after shooting on club bows.

So what now? Spent the session last night getting used to the bow, the extra poundage and the sight and am pretty happy with where I ended up.

The bow came with a button and longrod, but I've decided to leave those in the box for a while until I'm more settled in

Shooting indoors @ 20yds at the moment...

I would try to find someone in your club who can guide you so you don't pick up bad habits. Also consider using the long rod as soon as possible;again with some help.

Yeah I agree, would also recommend getting the sight and button on as soon as possible as well, get one of the more experienced archers to help out, but most importantly of all have fun.

Sight's already on - was shooting that on the club bows, so felt that wasn't too much of a change

Tried the button straight off as well - but as at that point I was having a few problems getting the sight set-up it went straight back in the box for another day...

Will try and whack the long rod on next time and see about getting the button on...

Personally I would suggest leaving the long-rod off until you reach at least third class as it can mask a multitude of sins. Get your form right first with some knowlegeable help. If the bow is kicking up on release, which it should be, just get a 5/16th bolt and some nuts to add some weight to the long-rod hole to stop you grabbing the bow on release; this is a cheap and effective way of adding weight without hindering your form improvement.

Get the button fitted as soon as you can so you can get a meaningful centreshot.

Always have a purpose when you go to shoot... don't wander from distance to distance haphazardly.

Then just shoot to consistently improve your average.

No. Use a longrod as early as possible, all it does is help you group better and therefore gives confidence.

Nice to see you sticking by your signature, Thom.

I know of archers waaaaaaay better than I that regularly, and by this I mean as part of a defined training program, shoot without stabilisation to ensure that their form is a good as it can be.

Bolting on the goodies may yield better results and so seem like a solution but will not make a better archer.

Stick to improving what is potentially the largest stabiliser in the system (the archer) and then add the goodies.

Any rushing at this stage will be like eating a microwave meal in a top restaurant.

No, I totally disagree. I cannot think why any decent archer would remove something from their bow either, the bow's reaction to everything is as important to the shot as your form, and should not be played with lightly. Furthermore, CONFIDENCE will make a better archer, although many coaches (and especially armchair coaches) tend to disagree.

I'm not here for the points just to offer help but I can assure you that armchair coach couldn't be further from the truth.

Anyway, you believe what you want and I'll leave it to Dankell to think it through and decide what's best for him/her.
