Flute riser problems

Big problems with my Sebastien flute riser that I got for christmas.

I was shooting indoors today approx 18 yds and my group on the target was getting lower and lower, I checked my sight and all was well so had a bit of a head scratch moment and kept on shooting with my sight adjusted to suit the group.

Well a couple of ends later "BANG ! and my top limb along with the tiller adjusting bolt bit *sorry don't know its correct name* shot onto the floor and I nearly touched cloth .

So here are pics of what's left of the thread in the riser, we think the adjuster bolt was slowly popping individual turns of thread until it could hold no more.

first of all good news that all that was hurt was your composure !

no idea whether this is a 'common' problem with the SF riser but assuming it was bought new get the thing back to the shop and get a replacement

Good thing you weren't hurt..... Trust me, it does hurt!

This is a good reason to check your tiller every time you assemble your bow!

Take it back where you bought it and they will replace it under warranty. Whether your happy about a direct replacement is up to you.

Hi Lou,

hopefully you are over your ordeal now. I'll be keeping a close eye on my Flute riser. (I think that it was you that was in Quicks Waterlooville when I bought mine - wanted a black one though).
So, if it was you, does that mean that the nice pink Nexus is even nearer?

All the best,

Alfie

I'm having that problem with my SF at the moment. The top tiller keeps coming loose after about 3 or 4 training sessions, hadn't heard of anything as bad as the tiller bolt shearing out though.

Hard luck loulou, at least it was still under waranty

Hi Everyone

Well I took my bow back to the shop they were very upset that this had happened to me, they were very good about it and offered a direct replacement. They also advised that because this has happened they felt I would not trust a SF ever again.

I will miss my SF as I did like it, but they done a great job of talking me out of changing it and then fate intervened sadly, but it was the second issue i'd had with the tiller bolt.

So here is a picture of the new riser complete with little pink bows added on my savers. (by me)

Can't wait to start shooting it at the weekend.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

Out of interest, did you have the poundage adjustment wound right down to minimum?
It's just that one possible explanation is that the limb bolt was wound out too far, and didn't have enough threads to pull on. Your picture only shows ~6 turns of thread which have sheared off and on my SF riser the limb bolt maximum wound-outness has the entire thread of the bolt is still in the thread of the riser.
Hope that you enjoy your new bow!

Looks from here like there were at least 8 threads stripped. The other (untouched) threads look a little flat, which might happen if someone drilled the initial hole too big, thus leaving very little metal to form the threads.

Glad you got it sorted - must've been a real heart stopper!

Hope that you enjoy your new bow!

I was on max poundage with the 28lb limbs and was thinking of going up to 30 or 32 in the near future so the adjustment on the upper limb was all the way in and then the lower limb adjusted slightly out to get the correct tiller

If you look at the pic we think it shows that the adjuster had vibrated loose and damaged all of the turns of thread, as the adjuster vibrated and loosened it was being pulled at an angle and this is seen in the last few very badly damaged threads (the looser it gets the more thread damage you get)

The guys at quiks reckon that the last 6 or 8 turns should be enough to hold the limbs if the poundage was on min adjustment anyway but in this case the locking screws must have been loose and I didn't notice

They also reckon that all this can happen in 1 shooting session and if not checked every time you shoot they can become loose very quickley

That's why I went for a Hoyt this time with a better locking system

the people at quicks were more than happy that it was a case of vibrating loose in a short space of time
