Tungsten points

Can't decide if I should get x10's this year (because I'm 50 nothing to do with shooting ability), the main question is do I really need the expensive tungsten points?. I'm hearing all sorts of horror stories about arrows breaking in straw bosses.

Or am I better with another set of trusty aces with 120gn points again?

Yes.

The answer, as you already have pointed out, is really whatever you fancy.
Buy what you want, and enjoy shooting them!

Kae.

I have shot X10's for years with standard SS points. The tungstens (in my opinion) seem to give better performance. Being 120 grain, ss points are 110, and alot smaller means the foc is much better (the centre of gravity is closer the point) and just seems to perform better. Plus with the tugstens you will get 90% (personal estimation) less damage then with SS. However I have experience little damage over the years. Most damage comes from the nock end.

Protours have been snapping in hard bosses. Normal 10's dont have this problem as they are thicker at the point end to the pro tour.

X10's

John

Can only comment regarding compound and the pro-tour.
Having shot both the standard and tungsten points it is my experience that they break irrespective of the point type, particularly with continued use in straw bosses.

Apparently these breaks occur at a far greater rate with the pro-tour (3 Dozen last summer season, 6 in one shoot) and are located right at the end of the pile shaft, usually preceded by a slight “bubbling” on the carbon surface.

It has come to the point where I now carry a spare set of ACE’s for use where I find straw, this does affect the scores but rather a lower score than £200 out of pocket.

So yes pro-tour’s are worth it and the tungsten points as well, but see about a foam boss at the club or where you usually shoot.

for normal X10's shooting recurve IMHO you would be just as well with steel. The X10 also seems to be tougher than the ProTour. When I was shooting normal X10's I had fewer breaks. However, as has already been pointed out here, X10's, particularly Protours, do not like straw bosses and I have read elsewhere on AIUK that Easton won't warranty them against this damage in the UK.

I found that the Nano XR and Nano pro do not have the same issues with straw and the same with Cartel Triples. We know many archers who shoot triples into straw week on week without any problems.

Regarding improved FOC, I only found 0.2% difference.

I went for the SS points in my X10s for compound. I shoot mainly into straw and the regular X10s are tougher than ProTours from what I've heard/read.

Just one correction. The normal X10 has no problems with "snapping" in hard bosses. Its only the Protour that has issues.

I have had 4 previous sets of X10's and now I'm on my 5th (god that's a lot of money) and have only ever used stainless points at full weight of 110grains I have shot thousands of arrows in practice and competition and I can't recall shooting them ever into a foam boss. Now most of these arrows have had around 46-48lb behind them and I have never had one break from just hitting straw, I had one break when it struck a longbow pile carelessly un-retrieved by it's owner (what's a longbow pile doing in the gold anyway). Performance as far as I'm concerned has never been an issue perhaps my scores could have been higher with tungsten's but I can't see it personally.
