Bow strings making questions

Right, I'm calling on the definiative knowldege base of AIUK

I've got a week of work, and now have the pins for my string jig. So this week I am going to complete the constuctio of the string jig, and make myself a string. But I have some questions if no one minds

My bow config, is 70" on a 25" riser with long limbs (Everest Pro) Teh limbs are 34# but I'm drawing 40ish# on my fingers

First off, what string material does the collective like? And how many strands?

Second, serving materials, same question.

Thirdly, nocking points. Bit of floss, beiter plastic or one of those Ambo ball nocks? Anyone any preferences, and reasons for those prefernces?

Ok, that's all for now

Many thanks

PAul

My preference is for 8125 - good material, easy to work with and comes in lots of colours.
Serving material - can't remember the name of the one I use, I will look it up and get back to you.
Nock point - at the moment, tied on serving material, although I'm very tempted by the beiter ones, I just haven't had chance to play with them. - The brass nocks wear my tab too quickly.

Kae.

I like majesty for string and serving (different product) - beiter nock points all the way, bit more of a pain initially but IMHO well worth it - after all why worry about the consistency of the nock if you're gonna hang it on a random bit of dental floss?

its only one bit of dental floss; it will be the same on every shot. if you do it right, same as a Beiter nocking point. Its just not as pretty..

Personally, to make the nocking point, I serve about 3/8 of an inch of Majesty serving material, over the centre serving, each way from the nock. This is alot easier than Beiters, and just as snug & consistent (again, if you do it right).

I don't use Beiter nocks, so whats the point in Beiter nocking point?

I use 18 strands of Majesty, with Angel ASB serving (smoothest ever!), and Majesty serving for the nocking point, using ACE pin nocks. For end loop serving I use BCY #3D with BIG loops to make it nice & quiet.

452X is also really nice, with 20 strands to get the same thickness as 18 strands of Majesty.

TBH Beardy, all the good string materials are about the same (except Angel ASB Dyneema; crappest ever!), and none of us will be able to tell the difference. You might choose, say, BCY 8125 because it comes in the prettiest colours. nowt wrong with that.

452X and 8125 are both excellent materials but you need to decide/find out which is best for you not someone else, the best way to do this if you can not lend a string is buy sample spools ( clickers have a really good selection at very competative prices). A sample spool should make a min of 4 strings dependant on number of strands used.

For serving I won't use anything other than Halo anymore but equally I have not tried the Angel serving and I know a lot rate that very highly both seem to be very smooth serving.

Personally I have found 452X a bit quicker but a bit less forgiving than 8125, so between these two you need to decide which you prefer a bit more speed or a string that is a little bit more forgiving.

I won't use anything other than dental floss anymore either, Brass is too heavy and just do not fancy the Beiter nock but that is personal choice.

Lastly I serve about 1cm above my tab and about 3 cm below again this reduces string weight.

Most people will need more than this, particularly below the tab, where the string can graze the arm guard. It needs some protection there.

Chris I was only stating what I do but it might help if you can comment more on the Angel strings as I have not used them ( especially if you have used say 452X or 8125 as well).

I would not recommend most archers to serve so short but as I said it is my personnal setup.
( just need to order more string material now from Graham at Clickers and make a few more strings if I can beg steal or borrow a jig again ).

i use Dynaflight 97 and brownel loop serving. for the nock serving i use monofiliment fishing line, and use the fishing line to make the nock points to, dont ask what poundage i just use line that is of the correct diameter for the amount of strands so tha the nock fits well,
12 or 14 strand string, depends on the colouration i want.

To the best of my knowledge the Winact was never made as a 24 inch riser, only in 23 inch and 25 inch options. Although this will have little or no influence on your choice of string material it is important on string length, also if I am right (not often but has been known) and riser is 24 inches it is not a Winact.
