Questions for Recurvers

Given that, to get to a reasonable standard, most of us will work at our Archery for a number of years,

How Much Time you do devote, on average,, to Archery each week? include in your reply all archery related activites - Club nights, tournements, gym work, kit maintainence, driving a 120 mile round trip to visit your favourite shop (we all do it!), arrow fletching, etc.

What standard have you reached? (Bowman, GMB etc)

And be honest here.... do you feel that something else in your life has to give, in order for you to achieve your ends - kids, partner, work and so on?

Bear in mind its unlikely that any significant others will actually ever read your replies (unless they are already converted and if so, they'll understand)

Starting things off

Around six hours at present, on average....will increase over summer

2nd Class

Not yet, but if I want to make BM then number of average hours will increase, invariably at the expense of family time.

Cool

At present i am shooting at bowman level I shoot on average 3 full rounds a week at varing distance's this would normally take about 15hours a week.
I do spend a bit of time each week checking my kit and renewing what needs to be renewed fletches string ect.
I do a monthly shop which is about a 80mile round trip, and i go to see my coach every 6 weeks that is a 180mile round trip I think if you add it together it equats to about 18hrs per on average.
Family wise I shoot with one of my sons this has made us a lot closer, I have a lot of time off during the week and my wife is at work during these hours so my practice time does not effect the family to much, But 35 away shooting days per year can cause a little friction.
goal for this year MB recurve
Cheers Nick

2 x 2hr sessions at the club a week on a Wed and Friday and about 2-3 hrs practicing form and reversals out the garden throughout the week.

Not sure on Target classification, never shot a Fita! in GNAS Field currently 2nd class and on the up and up. My goal is to hit 1st class by the end of this season.

Im learning to drive at last, so as soon as im driving and can use the wife's car i'll be up the club most weekends to get some quality practice in.

Thats the trouble is that i dont get enough practice on the field course. Indoors i can nail the centre now, on a flat i can score pretty well at range but its the slopes that kill me. need to get on the mountainside more if im going to raise the bar in field archery!

HI

I have taken up recurve again seriously after about a 10 years break since breaking my elbow. Been using the club recurves but no use with them. I shot on a

Tuesday - 2 hrs
Wednesday - 3 Hrs
Saturday - 2hrs
Sunday - Up to 8 Hrs sometimes

My ttime is spent between Compound and recurve now. Managed C Class indoors on compound - This will be my first outdoor season with it.

REcurve not got an indoor class started to late in the season - 3 weeks ago
Outside - I would be happy with 3rd Class to start with - Need plently practice mind you!

with access to good supervision/direction 3-6 hours practice a week should elicit 560+ portsmouth and 1150+ fita in two years.
my point is that a great deal of time is being spent by archers who without direction are failing to achieve this level.

I am a bit of an oddball regarding this.
Practice one evening a week (sometimes once a fortnight) for 2-3 hours.
Shoot tournaments most weekends during the summer (only 1 in winter).
Bowman for past 14 years. Although capable of MB scores (Target handicap 27) I have not attended any of the qualifying shoots.

I don't have any supervision or direction, and I surpassed this level in less than two years. I had about 6hrs of practice a week for about 40 weeks a year..
My girlfriend reached nearly that level with LESS practice, after half a year, with supervision & direction from me. Perhaps we (Uni. of Warwick) are just awesome..

BTW an 1150 FITA is alot harder than a 560 Portsmouth, even for a lady, which do you mean?

Your post is enlightening chris b (as ever)

I was talking about it being a level for all archers to attain not just special people like yourself.
The two scores are pretty much analogous, and where a 560 portsmouth shooter should be looking. If not then their form is weak or they have kit issues.

Ideally around 15-20 hours per week, but only get about 10 (if I'm lucky) at uni. Would probably be MB if I bothered doing enough of the relevant competitions in GB.

I've been doing archery at that sort of intensity since I was 14, so its more that I haven't developed any life outside it. I do have time for some cricket though, and having an archer girlfriend helps.
