Please tell me my new arrows are not too short!!

Hi

had my bow for a week. the shop cut the arrows with some "growing" room. Just been shooting in the garage and a couple of times the arrow fell off the back of the arrow rest. It was definitely the back and not the side.

Is it possible to "overdraw"? i.e. through bad technique? I found if I really focused on keeping the left shoulder down and kept it in the same position throughout the draw, I had more than an inch overhanging the arrow rest and was not able get the arrow to fall off.

Where would you stand if the shop had cut them too short??

Thanks

Kevin

I'm a bit confused - you say at the start of the post you were pulling the arrow off the back of the rest, and later that you were an inch in front of the rest??

In anwer to your question, yes you could, if you anchored too far back, overdraw. When you anchor, is the string on your nose and chin? If not, where is it?

Perhaps get someone to watch you and maybe take some pictures of you at full draw?

Hi Murray.

I said if I really focused on keeping the left shoulder down, then the arrow overhung the rest by 1.5 inches.

I just did a little test. I stuck my left arm out to the side with my shoulder up high and moved so that my finger tips were touching a wall. I then put my shoulders down as low as possible. i then reached out toward the wall again maintaining low shoulder and there was a gap of about 1.5 inches between finger tips and wall.

My theory. If you let the scapula come up, it canl also move away from the median(centre) line. IOW my reach had extended.

Think I've answered my own question, but if anyone has anything to add, any advice would be more than welcome.

Oh and my string is on the tip of my nose, Mediterranean grip ancored below jaw. Anchor point was the same when arrow fell off the back of the rest

Thanks

Kevin

Just out of interest, if you place the back of the arrow on your chest, can you stretchout your arms and touch anywhere on the arrow behind the point?

If your fingertips are infront of the arrow, then it is very likely that your arrows are too short.

Hopefully my explanation makes sense.

Hi thanks,

I have 2" appx behind the pile. or 2" extending past my fingertips.

I'm sure they're fine.

Depending on shoulder width that might give a misleading result.

If you place the nock of the arrow on your chin (or at the corner of your mouth under the aiming eye) and reach out with your bow hand toward the end of the arrow, there should be 2 inches beyond the web of the bow hand.

did you get them at a shop or mail order?

might be an idea to go back and ask them to check for you.

your rights are set by the Sales of Goods Act 1984
paragraph c section b

"the item must be fit for the perpose of use"

so if the shop has taken the wrong arrow length then its up to the shop to replace them with the correct ones.
the biggest draw back is that your relation with the shop is gone !!

There can be a big difference between a draw where the bowshoulder is in your ear, and one where the bow shoulder is down and slightly extended (even just keeping your head still can easily add an inch or so to someone's draw length).

I've been working with a club member this weekend. His clicker was just on the front of his (GM) riser when we started a week or so ago. It's now nearly on the button and still needs adjustment back a bit! (this is an archer whos original form was actually pretty reasonable).

Go back to the shop, take your arrows and get them to take a looksee. It IS possible that they accidentally cut or measured them wrongly.

Yes it is entirely possible tooverdraw due to bad technique as it appears from the following you have found yourself.

I was over drawing 31" arrows and then my draw technique and grip were changed slightly and now I shoot happily with a 29.5" draw.

If it were an issue with the arrow then your would over draw all the time rather than when you let your shoulder move.
