Gents Fita

For the last 2yrs, I have been close to MB, missing it by one score. I have a list as long as my arm of 1185 - 1189 FITA's that you wouldn't believe , it's getting quite depressing. I seem to Shot ok at 3 distances and then throw it away on one, it's not normally the 30m distance either. How does everyone make sure that they are consistent throughout the distances, In practice I can put in 1200+ with ease but I do lose it a tournament. I don't feel myself that I'm worried or anything like that or overly stressed.

Any ideas please.

If you are really shooting different scores in a tournament than in practice then it's mental, and might be because you are building 1190 to be something different when really it's not. In that case I would refocus your goals onto something that means something to you and is more long-term. Then MB will come without stress as you move forwards towards the next goal.

However my feeling, from the types of scores you posted, is that the reason you always miss MB is because you averagely score at just below MB level and when you need three scores at RS shoots it's just not going to happen unless you are lucky. You wouldn't ever expect your FITA to be consistent throughout all the distances.... I'm certainly not, neither are archers better than me. You just need to shoot better so that even with bad distances you get MB . I'm sure you can achieve this. (ps if you're on the edge of any desired score you really could do with your good distance being 90m so I might practice that more).

btw I have had the same with GMB as in the last two seasons I have shot below that level on average (1240). I wouldn't expect to be GMB but sometimes the good scores just happen to be in the right competitions, sometimes not, I don't go chasing comps to try and make it happen and judge each competition on more than the score (eg I take conditions into account).

I'm starting to think it's more of a mental side. To be honest I have no coach have a few people who I ask advice from but nobody who sits down and looks at my technique etc or were things are going wrong I do it myself. I have tried in the past with a coach but for one reason or an other it has worked. (one person I worked with watched me shot said everything was fine and that was it, I was in a slump and couldn't get over a 1,000 for a FITA)

If I'm honest to you Moo Mopp I'm not sure how to set a long term goal for myself, I could for someone else but not for me, I'm very focused on the here and now in life and work etc. I find it very frustrating as I am capable of posting good scores and in comps I put in some really good distance but then some really bad ones.

to answer one point I practice 90m & 50m down the field the majority of the time.

Here's a professional article on goal setting:
Goal setting
And my method:
93% of the best there is.

Mental training is also covered in many posts so I suggest a search, and also to read some books on the subject (one of my favourites is 'With Winning in Mind: The Mental Management System' by Lanny R. Bassham).

And don't get hung up on the bad distances, you will find this is not uncommon or unlikely, take your averages and work from there.

When i was shooting well, i was in exactly the same situation.

Aim for 1220 - 1230 in practice and give yourself a bit of lee way by aiming for 1215 in competiion. If you miss it by 10 then you still have 1205.

Do you put extra pressure on your self by working out splits and 'if i get 300 on the next distance then i will get 1192'?

Few years ago I was chasing my 1200 star and I kept missing it by a few. So I set my target as 1205. Guess what, I claimed my star at the next FITA. Give it a go it might work for you too.

Don't look at the final score for answers, look at each shot one by one.
for 1200 you want

270
300
300
330

So average reds and you stand a good chance.

Now when you get those shots where you know it will be lower than a 7, let it down and relax. Don't mess around trying to score golds, just shoot clean shots. You will be amazed how easy it is then and you will likely kill that 1200 fast.

Speaking as one who has just broken that particular barrier, the way I aimed for it was by scrapping the exact splits (the same ones Marcus mentions), and aiming for slightly higher ones.
The principle is a combination of aiming for splits and looking for a different 'arbitary number' as a couiple of others have suggested.
What I aimed for was 275,305,305,335. When I acheived it I beat 3 of those targets and dropped down to 293 (with a miss!) at 50m. That way there was no pressure on myself to acheive every distance score, when I got that score at 50 I knew I already had points 'in the bank' and was still relaxed at 30.

That said I couldn't get close the week after at Lilleshall but thats a different story!
