is your shot cycle from setup to release ?

i think i know many good (thanks moo-mop ! ) archers have amazingly consistent times but does it matter how long that time is ?

is there any correlation between (consistency of) shot cycle time and level of archery achieved ?

Apparently there is a correlation. I have heard the better the archer, the more consistent the shot timing.

If you watch the videos, Park, Sung-Hyun is absolutely consistent - think the whole sequence is exactly five seconds. (or could be 4, can't remember). I could watch it all day though.

Many archers have their own sequence and own pace but it is always consistant.

The italian lady always always churns out a very very fast shot but it is so consistant, hard to beat.

Park Kyung Mo however spends more time aiming than any olympiad I've seen, but that is just what he does and gets results from it.

In the end you need to find your groove, there Is such a thing as too fast and too slow but it differs between people.

mine is around 8 to 9 seconds from lifting the bow to loose.....but then I am currently spending extra time checking many different things before aiming.
On my best days- when everything is flowing nicely it's nearer 6 seconds.

I've found that anything longer than around 9 seconds just wont hit where I want no matter how hard I try to make it happen - for me the set-up is obviously wrong and needs to be re-started. After 9 seconds I am stressed, frustrated, impatient and find myself 'just wanting to let go'...it's not a strength issue, but after 9 seconds I begin to lose commitment to the shot.

mines between 6 and 7 seconds, and as consistant as i can get them,

but you know that perfect groove you can sometimes get into and every thing just works shot after shot, well i lost the key to that room so like everyones i go through a mental check list

Often,if the time to make a shot varies, the variation happens at the stage just before release. Coming through the clicker can be smooth or ragged. Top archers are better at contolling that section and their times show how controlled they are.

This is the timing I try to shoot at with minimal pauses inbetween each arrow, just a feeling of calm and comfortable shooting.
My best scores seem to occur when the body and mind mechanics work well together without actually thinking about them. This when it does happen enables good archery scores.

Spending a lifetime over each shot IMHO can easily become almost a paralysis, often made worse by over analysis.
Good archers from what I've seen so far, appear to make it all look very fluid and natural, which is obviously after years of preperation and practice with purpose. Emulating the good bits (good timing) minimising the bad bits is what we stive to do each time we shoot.

Agree absolutely. In fact I try to have this "ticking" somewhere in my mind as it also helps to clear out the other rubbish. If I've relaxed properly then the clicker will go on "one thousand and (4=click) - almost always the cleanest releases and the best shots. It sort of goes like this

One thousand and one - set-up and raise bow arm

One thousand and two - draw to transfer/holding

One thousand and three - final aiming

One thousand (expansion) and click!

If I've filled my mind with other junk I can easily get to 8/9 seconds, tension creeps in, the release will be awful - and the arrows usually low left. Must stop doing that
