which glue? is bostick ok or should i buy the fletching glue. how long does it take to set

I've had a sherwood, wasn't very keen on it...I use the spigarelli jig (of which the cartel is a copy) and wouldn't change.

As for adhesives...I've not been tempted to use bostick, but I have used superglue in a pinch.....thanks Numpty!

TBH, the amount of glue you will use makes the comparative cost of fletching glues seem insignificant, a single tube of NPV ( my preferred ) has lasted me dozens and dozens of arrows (for myself, the club and arrows built for others). So don't save the odd few pence on a tube of glue, it will last you ages.

as far as setting is concerned, I use more than one jig at a time, by the time I have finished the 4th arrow, the glue on the first has enough set to remove the clamp and prepare for the next fletch (though I will often leave it longer than this).

Certain glues (those based on cryoacrelate(sp?) - erm superglue, but a tad thicker) bond very quickly, others take longer. Your best bet is to leave it 10-15 mins and you should be ok (unless you are working with feathers - as these have a natural curl, if the glue isn't completely set, they tend to lift or retake their natural shape)

Poundshop superglue, get the stuff with the long nozzles on cards of six. I never use anything else and I never loose a fletch.

Then get yourself a Zip Strip to remove the fletchings whenever you need to. I know it's relatively costly but treat it as an investment.

Tollgate, Fletch-tite platinum and a cheap digital timer.

A bottle of isopropyl is a good investment. Mine was a fiver from the local chemist three years ago.

Clean all your shafts and don't touch the fletch-area again.

Get into a sequence (hey, this is archery).

Clean the fletch whilst in the clamp using above and a cotton bud, apply glue, fit the fletch, press start on the timer and go back after FOUR minutes.

When it beeps, remove the clamp, clean the clamp with a scalpel, insert ext fletch and clean the base as above. THEN check the last fletch and clean up excess with a fingernail or matchstick, put the arrow back in the jig and rotate tot he next position, meanwhile the alcohol on the van has dried and is ready for glue.

In the last month I have fletched five dozen ACCs this way with no problem.

Use the four minutes to clean up the previous arrow, put the kettle on, row with the spouse etc.

Fletch-tite platinum will last you ages, you only need a little or you'll spend an age cleaning-up.

Another useful bit of kit is a table-clamp vice (one with a ball-joint for angle). This is much more useful than the angled mouning plate that you can buy for the tollgate.

Superglue and all other cyanoacrylates are useful when at the field but do not use it on a vane that has been cleaned with isopropyl... the glue goes very brittle.

All this is IMHO, of course.

I clean my shafts with IPA and wipe the base of my fletches. Like I said in my previous post I use Poundshop Superglue and I've fletched dozens and dozens of arrows and neither Mrs Worthipa or I have lost a fletch yet.

P.S. Apart from Fletchtite which is for aluminium arrows, the only two glues on the Easton website are cyanoacrylates.

Sounds like a waste of to me

Not nocking superglue and I think it is great for running repairs, I just like to use a solvent glue (just my own preference, like so many things in this game).

Understood about Easton's website and agree with you on Fletchtite being for aluminiums only; however, Fletchtite Platinum is different as per Bohning's website:

Except you probably paid significantly more for your jig but save on the glue.

at least with a bitz i know its going to last me a life time and it was under 40 quid including postage,
