Question Sight pin with or without circle

Mmmmm.... Another of those beginner's questions.

I have started shooting with a pin sight [field shooting like] and then when I got my first recourve sight it came with the standard circle with vertical pin inside. My trainer advised me to take the vertical pin away and I was left with only the round to aim with.

Never liked it so I got a 8/32 screw and ciselled a pin out of it. Slightly easier to aim but the score has gone down

Is there something I am missing? I have read somewhere about the subconscious playing a part in the aiming and the fact that we are instinctively good ad working with concentric circles.

I am now considering getting another pin, I was looking at the Cartel Square Open Pin.

Opinions? Advice?

My personal choice would be a Beiter sight tunnel, with a black housing (some like the clear ones). There are loads of different inserts for them (crosshairs, dots, lines, circles, fibre pin, etc etc) and they're all interchangeable depending on your preference.

At around £8-9 they're not the cheapest around, but they're well made and I like the idea of changing inserts to suit your needs. Available at most decent archery retailers.

I have similar, but the Arten one, which is a bit cheaper than the Beiter one.

My scores went up since I started using it.

I use a recurve Titan Scope sight pin. Currently I have just the flourescent pin to aim with. I'm thinking however of getting some transparent circular decals to put over the lens to provide a circle surrounding a flou pin. All of which would be "floating" infront of the target, as opposed to having a mount jutting out from the side of the sighting circle.

Incidently if anyone can link a online archery shop that would sell such a decal (that doesn't cost a fortune), let me know

Merlin sell them - something like £1 for a strip of various sizes. I've often considered getting a Beiter tunnel, purely because I find aiming with circles a lot easier than just a dot - I overaim and concentrate on trying to get it sitting still rather than letting it float. I also find they are more forgiving - if I surround the gold with the ring then even if I'm moving, chances are the centre of the ring is still in the gold.

The type of sight pin the works for you is personal choice.

I have noticed with some beginners with previous experience with guns prefer a cross-hair sight, one less new thing to get used to I suppose. I prefer a small open cirle rather than the "dot on a pin" type sight.

The advantage of the pins with the multiple inserts (i.e. Arten and Beiter) is you can experiment to find the one that is right for you.

I used to have a flu pin - however, it made me over-aim and my group sizes and scores suffered as I was focussing too much on aiming and not enough on actually shooting. I now use a beiter tunnel with a circle frame kit. The different sizes of circles allows you to play around a fair bit, and although it takes getting used to, the jump in scores was rather astonishing. Even with a huge circle, I can still land tiny groups. I've tried going back to a pin and crosshairs, but straight away I start to over-aim and I remember exactly why I do not use them!!!

cant go wrong with a TITAN,
but i can seem to ignore the fluro pin when i want to and line the outside of the target rings to the inner diametre of the TITAN, the removeable o'ring system allows me to change the sight appeture to help with this.
have you thought about getting a thicker oring to put in???? even a square sectioned one, even plastic washers with a smaller hole to place between oring and lens?

Try 'quickly' placing the tip of a pencil precisely in the centre of a saucer five times in a row. then try it with a 2p piece... You will soon see how well the brain lines-up concentric circles.

I've been thinking of going the plain circle route, to avoid "over-aiming", also since moving outside to shoot, as at longer distances the pin covers the gold... Have been using the standard pin that comes with the SF Carbon sight recently.

Was thinking of going the Beiter tunnel route, but am not sure:

a) which colour (clear and black) would be best? What's the pro/con of each?

b) which inserts to get? - ideally I guess a set of different size circles for different distances (v.small at 70m/80 yards!), does anyone know what numbers these are?

c) which size to get? 8mm or 12mm? I guess 12mm is better for indoors, 8mm better for outdoors?

Thanks!
