Tighten up your server, then tie and hang a 10lbs bag of groceries off it, loosen until bag start to slowly fall and that`s your setting. Commit to memory and away you go!
That`s the cheapest way!

If you wind it on and the string moves with it or when you let it go it goes backwards, then it's too tight.

If you flick it over the string and the serving tool flies away over the room it's too loose.

Oh and the tension can vary a lot over a one-inch length of serving....

welcome to the part of string-making that really p***es me off!
(anyone know if the investment in the Beiter set-up eliminates this?)

Leave em in, but make sure you serve in the same direction as the twists, otherwise if you put more twists in, your unwinding the serving and it will fall off.

Jig tension, tight enough to hold the jig against the string when you turn it, but slack enough to be able to turn it.
I have one of those "ordinary" serving jigs. The one with 3 holes in it that your supposed to thread the thread through. I find it impossible to get satisfactory consistant tension using the 3 holes, so now I just go direct from the spool straight through the little hole and on to the string.

I would be interested in people's methods for threading through that tiny hole though. Its too small to just thread the thread through like threading a needle. Currently I take half a strand of bowstring material (waxed dacron will do). Double it and push it backwards through the tiny hole. I can then open up the dacron to give an "eye" through which I can pass the serving thread. Pulling the dacron back through the hole threads the serving thread through the tiny hole. But its hell of a faff! There has to be a better way! Suggestions anyone?

Yes, put a flame to the end wet your fingers and roll real fast...
or buy a Beiter.
