Cracked limbs

What do you make of this?

Hoyt 900cx 40lb long limbs. Theyve been shooting fine but on putting the bow together today i noticed what i thought was just a bit of hair on the limb - turned out to be a nasty looking crack. The scary thing is both limbs have near identical cracks in exactly the same place. And before anyone asks, they havent been dry-fired, misused, set at an odd tiller, over-drawn or set at a starnge bracing height.

Any chance of shrinking the pics a bit - they're rather difficult to view.

As for the cracks, they're not looking pretty - I assume the dealer is getting a polite phone call tomorrow morning then.

Pics should be better now, sorry about that. And yeah the limbs are going straight back (and im sure i'll have no problem regarding that). I'm a bit dubious about going for the same again though. No issues at all performance wise theyve been great, but for both limbs to develop cracks in the same place...has anyone else seen the 900cx do this?

Is there any significance in the fact that the cracks run slightly upwards on one limb, and slightly down on the other? Just a thought.

Not sure, the crack runs down on the top limb and up on the lower limb.

Makes me glad I bailed on the CX900s when Hoyt couldn't deliver the right ones to the dealer. Kind of sad what appears to be happening to one of the great names in archery.

Piphil (I think is how he spells it) has (had?) a pair or 900 that were doing that last weekend. He said he would return them early in the week, but I don't know what he did about them.

Unhappy

Indeed. I had what looks like exactly the same problem. I found the hair cracks had extended from the top of the limb under the top laminate of the black carbon fibre part of the limb. Yours look worse than mine - my cracks were smaller, and only on one side.

I returned mine for a refund. I've been told the damage is only cosmetic, but you don't buy £300 limbs and expect them to crack after 3 months. It's a shame, as they're otherwise very nice limbs.

Although I will point out I'm working on a very small sample size, this could be a tricky problem for Hoyt. The owner of the shop where I bought my replacement limbs (Samick Extremes) said he had 2 pairs with these cracks, but it was only aesthetic and he was otherwise very impressed with them; also, the guy who pointed out the cracks in my limbs had the problem, and was awaiting a replacement set.

These cracks are quite difficult to see if you don't know where to look, and people may be missing them.

As to whether it's a problem that will eventually lead to limb failure - I don't know. Advice I've been given ranges from "purely aesthetic" to "could delaminate at any minute", although the latter have mainly been tongue-in-cheek.

It'll be interesting to see what Hoyt's official line is on it. It's not as if limbs haven't had problems early in their lifespan before - I believe the W&W Innos were recalled, and a design of Border limbs too off the top of my head, so it happens to the best of them. From my point of view, I'm currently shooting too many competitions in too many places to be worrying about cracking limbs, so I went for a more proven limb, although probably technically less good than the Hoyt.

Should the Hoyts be re-designed to avoid the problem then I'd certainly consider them in future - they're extremely nice limbs.

So, end ramble - to the OP: return them to the shop with receipt and they should replace them. I should give thanks to Quicks at this point, who were very quick to offer a refund/store credit/swap, and were generally very helpful.
