RE: Newbie: When to upgrade draw weight?

Joe,

the poundage was wound up by a club member however upon closer inspection about 1 week later at a practice shoot I noticed that the limbs were not properly lined up. The tiller was also out by quite a bit.

I have maneged to correct these faults but have not been able to shoot the bow much with the adjustments.

RE: Newbie: When to upgrade draw weight?

Hiya Kinkychinky,
I agree with you. As much as I respect Joe's experience and advice - I too have been a "victim" to an experienced and well meaning club member. That's the reason why I went back to the shop, which is only 20 mins drive, where the staff are very knowledgeable and helpful and the adjustments only cost 2 packets of chocolate digestive biscuits.

Hiya Gold Finger,
Great minds think alike, that was what I was thinking of doing next. The extender clicker just seemed to be a simple and quick way around a problem at the time (although not a cheap solution, why do they cost and arm and a leg when there's not a lot to them ). There is another point to changing the clicker and I think it is something down to personal preferences. That is that the extender clicker is a magnetic clicker and some how doesn't seem to be as positive as the blade type clicker on a friends bow. Again, probably just personal preferences.

Best wishes,
Steve
P.S. I would love to own a set of Navigators or ACE's, unfortunately the budget doesn't stretch that far

RE: Newbie: When to upgrade draw weight?

hi kinkychinky... do you know what poundage you are actually holding?
I make 80yards no problem, and I'm probably holding around 29lb at the moment. The only disadvantage I had at the weekend (poundage wise) was when the wind blew on it rained, my arrows were probably slightly more adversely affected than those with higher poundage. I'd agree that being able to shoot the last arrow of a 12 doz round as well as the first is probably a better goal initially than higher poundage.
Also, a couple of years ago, I was shooting 90m with 36lb on my fingers... I was at the bottom of my sight, with it as close to the bow as poss, but I was making distance and grouping quite well.
High poundage isn't always necessary to make distance, but, as other people have said, there are certain advantages to it...

RE: Newbie: When to upgrade draw weight?

I haven't measured, but the limbs are marked 32lb. They have been wound up on the riser to the max (about 10%) making them about 35lbs @ 28".

My draw length is about 26" making in theory 31lbs on the fingers.

Have been told that my arrows are probably a bit on the weak side since winding up the poundage. They tend to land on the target to the right side of the gold. Chopped 1/2" off them to try to stiffen them but made little difference.

The groupings have got a lot better since I've started using a clicker, but it's very awkward using it. Must practise, practise, practise...

Avalon, has injury made you drop 7lbs on your draw weight?

Also what arrows are you using to reach 80yds? The one's I'm currently using are Easton XX75 (1816 @ 27.5").

Can you also post the kit that you're currently using?

Thanks

RE: Newbie: When to upgrade draw weight?

I was shooting 36lbs, cranked up 8-10%
I am now shooting 40lb limbs, still wound up at the same setting.
The old limbs were w&w challenger, the new ones are w&w winacts. They feel no greater pull, possibly due to carbon fibre v glassfibre. The challenger would go 80 yards, these go further and better.

RE: Newbie: When to upgrade draw weight?

I'm shooting an avalon with vector limbs, also shooting ACEs, which aren't exactly tuned to the bow (too stiff). So I do have the advantage of arrows over XX75. However, (and I'm sure Shirt will remember) I shot a Windsor last year (my only competition) with 2?lb on my fingers and Jazz arrows. So I could still make 60 yards ok, and 70m I could do with my sight turned around, though the groups weren't great.

Yes, the poundage drop was due to injury... not through shooting, I must add! Wrote my car off and tore muscle around my right shoulder. 12 months of physio and no shooting later, I started again at very low poundage (20) last summer. I've very gradually built back up to where I am now, through 3 sets of limbs (I can't say how impressed I was with the Winner Striker limbs!), and though I'd appreciate a bit of extra poundage for distance in the wind and rain, I daren't change anything too quickly. I'm hoping by the end of the summer to be up to about 34lb. But, for now, being able to shoot a whole 12 dozen round well is the goal (I finished one this weekend, but the last few dozen were.... !"££"*%#)

For shooting long distances like 80yrds, do away with the Platinum Pluses ASAP. Like Barry said, get some Cartel Triples. Yes, they cost a bit more than XX75's and other allys, but they are worth every penny!

You did also nearly finish a FITA, and would have got 1100+ for it...
About 26# on your fingers for BUSA? Not a lot, I know that much, those arrows really were going high...
