Newbie: Is it worth using stiffer arrows?

Hi,

as a beginner to archery, I don't want to keep upgrading arrows everytime I increase my draw weight?

Is it worth buying arrows that are too stiff for my draw weight so that as I progress to heavier draw weight they will become the correctly splined arrows. (I hope I got that right)

A prime example of what I don't want is when I purchased my first archery set up about 3 weeks ago. Since then I have wound up the poundage of the limbs to + 10%. I have been told that my arrows are now too weak. Rather than buying a new set of correctly splined arrows and have them become too weak in a few weeks time when I get new heavier limbs would it be feasible to shoot too stiff arrows accuratley so that I can "grow into" the arrows as I steadily progress with heavier poundages.

Thanks

If your not using a clicker but some arrows that are too long, usually chopping an inch off the front moves them up a spine box. </p>

But then again, if your not using a clicker, why not? </p>

RE: Newbie: Is it worth using stiffer arrows?

Already had 1/2" chopped off my current set of arrows, but this made little improvement.

I tried the clicker and found that I was holding the string longer and my shots became more inconsistant than without the clicker. My fingers were also becoming sore.

RE: Newbie: Is it worth using stiffer arrows?

Technique is more important than arrow matching. Unless you have an unlimited budget, using stiff arrows is the way to go if you plan on upping the draw weight.

Persevere with the clicker even if takes months to get the hang of it. If you watch the clicker going down the arrow point as part of the draw then you won't spend ages at full draw waiting for it to 'go off'.

Sore fingers usually results from bad finger placement on the string. Get the string just behind the middle finger knuckle and bend the fingers. That way the string won't creep forward and end up hanging off the fingertips.

RE: Newbie: Is it worth using stiffer arrows?

Joe,

So even if I shoot all day, with correct finger placement, they shouldn't become sore. Will need to work on this. Along with the clicker.

I'm thinking of getting some Easton X7 2012 or even going to 610 Navigators to replace my current XX75 1816. What differences will I see in these new arrows?

I take it that my sight marks will move up slightly with the X7's and even more so with the Navigators.

Thanks.

RE: Newbie: Is it worth using stiffer arrows?

Um - I am assuming you are using a tab.

From My aluminium arrow days the only difference between X7 and XX75 I recall is that X7's broke and XX75's bent (and could be straightened). If your in a transitional arrow phase I would stick with the XX75. Negligible difference in sightmark between them.

If you desperately want carbon arrows then I would go for triples or ACC - much cheaper than navigators and not much more expensive than X7s. Makes sense though to stabilise the arrow length and draw weight before forking out that much money on carbon arrows.

It's a funny thing, but in our club clickers are regarded almost in the same way as dabbling in Witchcraft - I've no idea why, and as a relative novice the conflicting opinions on using a clicker are very confusing. I should add that at the moment, I don't use one - though the dabbling in witchcraft is looking more attractive if it will improve my scores ;-)

Strangely, quite a few archers at our club use a clicker and most have been telling me to get one ! In fact it came in the post from bowsports this morning and is now fitted to my bow. I'm itching to give it a go tomorrow night !!! My only dilemma now is whether to go by car or broomstick, LOL !!</p>

RE: Newbie: Is it worth using stiffer arrows?

It don't think there's much question about whether or not to use a clicker, but different coaches certainly have differing views as to when newbies should start using one.
The simple fact is, if you're going to be shooting longer distance, you need a clicker. 4 or 5mm difference in draw length can be the difference betwen a gold and a miss!
I got mine after 4 months of shooting, and though it didn't make any difference indoors, I'm sure it's helped outdoors.
Back on topic though, I've recently noticed that my arrows appear to get stiffer as I get tired - my loose becomes less efficient and I'm putting less energy into the arrow, so they go left (R/H archer)
At least with a clicker I know that I'm still reaching full draw, therefore I can pinpoint the problem to my loose. It's one less variable, so, GET A CLICKER!

Wow! Does that small distance really make such a difference? Is there any data on this? Hmmm.. got me thinking now
