| Dont think so. I did a Western a few weeks ago, and shot 594 (one short of a second class score!). The ironic thing was, if I'd stopped after the 2 dozen at 50 yds, and entered it as a National, (I cant remember the exact number, but) I'd have got a 2nd class score! If you're entering it as a National, you're entering it as a National, and likewise for a Western. You just have to be aware of your scores as you're totting up. Lesson learned here - add up as you go along, not all at the end, like I did!! I blame it on the simplicity of Robbo's spreadsheet! ![]()

I usually count in my head, using a deviation from where I want to be, kinda like card counters do. Plus, it's good for the mental arithmetic skills ![]()

Nationals are good rounds - if you work out the average scores needed for most rounds to achieve a certain class, for some reason Nationals come out much lower. eg. to get a 2nd Class score: Bristol 2 - 911 points / 144 arrows = 6.3 avg Windsor - 713 points / 108 arrows = 6.6 avg Western - 595 points / 96 arrows = 6.2 avg Warwick - 297 points / 48 arrows = 6.2 avg National - 436 points / 72 arrows = 6.0 avg

The GNAS handbook has a table with handicap scores for 2 dozen arrows at any distance. Form that you can get very close to the handicap score for any round (give or take a few minor blips). You can also use the handicap to calculate whether a score is any particular classification (given some restrictions on maximum class available for a round type). Thus for any round where a 1st class score is available it needs the same handicap to achive for any round e.g. Gents recurve 1st class = 44 handicap York: 698 = 44 handicap New Western: 43 = 44 handicap etc The handicaps vary by bow type, and age/gender |

| Thanks guys, all food for thought. The national I'd say is about the level of round I can try at my current ability. Does your handicap reduce each time you shoot a certain score, or must that be in actual competition?

| Your handicap will only reduce if you improve your scores. If you keep entering the same scores, it wont change. However, if you shoot WORSE scores, your h'cap wont go back up again. You can enter any officially signed score sheets though, providing they're counter-signed by another club member and he/she's corroborated your score. It doesnt have to have been shot in a competition, so you can score a round whenever you shoot, as long as someone else counter-signs your sheet.
