First Long Rod for a Junior

My son (10 yrs old), is currently shooting a wooden 54" bow, pulling around 20lbs with a draw length of about 23". He's just achieved his first 2nd Class score in a Junior Windsor at the weekend, as a reward I've bought him a better sight than the crappy old one he's currently using (cheers Radar!)

He's now enquiring about whether he can use a long rod, to help his consistency and grouping, and as I happen to have a 30" Arten ally one knocking around the house doing nothing, would it be suitable for him to use this, or would it be too long for him?

You could try it with his bow. It might be too long, but then again that length might be perfect for his setup. The least you can do is try.

i`d say try it out it maybe to heavy for him, my daughter is 11 and my long rod was to heavy for her so she now has a 12" rod which i`ll add weights to at intervals to get her used to the weight (she`s shot 2 jnr bowmans so far with her rolan recurve 16lb)

IMHO it is too early for junior ffish to move to using a long rod. As I personally know him, I feel that adding weight to the bow at this moment in time will be counter productive. A training aid to help technique might be a better investment.

It might be OK without tipweight; with a light bow like that, the weight of the rod itself might be enough. And it would probably make him feel good!

If he's anything like most children I know ( and I have 3, though all grown up now) he will be annoyed if he doesn't get one. But if he finds it actually makes shooting harder, he will give it up of his own accord. Try it!

Wink

My 8 year old daughter has been using a 28 inch ally long rod on a club trainer bow for a couple of months now and hasn't had any trouble with it. Give junior a crack with it, he'll soon tell you if he doesn't like it - kids are very good at that, as you know!

Tiny_Trunkles took the weights off a carbon long rod and used that
