String hand wrist pain

Recently I have on occasions experienced pain in the wrist of my string hand at the end of a shoot. It is nnot every time, but fairly regular. I was wondering if anyone had experienced the same, or can give me an indication of the likely cause.

I am assuming I am probably not keeping everything in line, and could possibly also be putting extra torque on the string too. I am not shooting quite the scores I was a month ago, which may also be a sign.

The pain is very localised. It is about a inch (2-3cm) above the point the wrist bends, and in the centre of the outside of the forearm.

Any suggestions welcome. (The obvious one is to get someone to watch me at the club on Tuesday, which I will do).

I realised I was having some pain when I switched to my angel tab! I was also 'flicking' some of my arrows out to the right when shooting, it turned out my problem was trying to release with the string perched on my finger tips(shallow hook). I was given a master class by David Hunter on how to use my tab correctly using a deep hook and the design of the tab - my grouping improved and I haven't had any pain in my wrist since!

Just my penny worth

Although not a doctor, this can be a sign that you are hooking your hand inwards, rather than having the back of the hand flush with the wrist and fore arm.

Sitting here, wrist strapped up, having only shot two doz yesterday. My pain is actually in the centre of the joint. I will let you know if I find the cause, but I will also be following this thread with interest.

Luckily, I can use a mouse right handed but typing isn't great.

Sponge.

Sounds like this may be my issue too. I know I sometimes do not get a very deep hook. When I don't I seem to struggle to get through the clicker more too. I have been trying to concentrate on it, but maybe not enough. Just for reference do you shoot right or left handed, so I can work out whether my bad shots are going in the same relative direction as yours (I am right handed, i.e. bow in left hand, drawing with right)

This may be part of my problem too. I have been told I do not have ideal build for recurve (arm length and short neck), so I know that at times I do not get my elbow right back in to line (sticking out slightly sideways). Mind you I have decided to ignore the advice on the build, since the second part of the comment leads towards THE DARK SIDE....No, No!

Thanks for the comment Whitehart

I am right handed / bow in left hand etc. As I say, I was advised to use the deep hook to stop the flicking out of some arrows - it has done the trick - and no sore wrist!!

This may go further to indicating that my issue is the same. Shot yesterday, and though I came second, I did not score well. Most of the bad shots I had were going right too....

It's worth noting that too deep a hook can also cause string wrist pains - we have first hand experience of this

Basically, it can put too much strain on the tendon that controls the ring and little fingers. You need the right amount of hook - not too deep or shallow.
