Probably the reason you're having problems seeing the string is due to the light conditions.

My daughter ran into this problem. Indoors, she could look "through" the string, but outdoors, she couldn't. The string was more defined.

The reason you're having the problems is that in the high light of outdoors, your eyes are dialated clear down to let less light in. The irus is so small you don't have enough vision to see "through" the string. Where as indoors, the irus of your eye is open, and you have a larger area to see, which lets you look through the string. Unfortunately for you, it leaves the string kind of translucent.

Try looking through the string, and centering it as best you can. This is what my daughter actually prefers since she is used to using a peep sight on her compound. Seeing arround the string is harder to do for her.

I have found this thread quite interesting because I find it quite difficult to make out a string picture indoors and find it ok outdoors.

Does anyboby know what string materials are available in different colours ?

I usally shoot fast flight outdoors but would not have a problem changing for the indoor season.

Simon Needham covers this in his book pages 156/157. He does not talk about string colour but suggests wearing a visor to cut down the variation in pupil dilation both indoors and out.

Different types (sodium for example) of indoor lighting in sports halls will also affect the string picture.

Colours

Just a reminder about FITA rules. Any sort of marking on the string CAN be interpreted as a "sighting device". So the placing of sticky tape or dental floss on the string in the line of sight area may be frowned upon by punctilious officials.

I had a very interesting chat on that subject with a clever official this last summer because I had used some dental floss to increase my string's visibility. Fortunately I had met the gentleman a few days before a competition and had thought of asking.

You certainly do not want your beloved equipment be declared illegal just at the beginning of a competition?

That also is why the height of the serving on the string also may be of interest to officials, since the serving should not extend into the sighting area.

Then the best option is to have a very constrasting string, be it of uniform colour or mixed colours.

So to colour part of your string, like this guy:

would be illegal, then?

String colour and picture

Im glad its just not my eyes! After Hawks Fita on Saturday where i really struggled to see my white fastflight string I rushed to Aim4sport just down the road to search out other colours, I got there 5 mins before they closed. And after consultation with Stan and with his usual forthright manner and common sense a newly made (by Stan) black fastflight string landed on the doormat on Tuesday Morning. Now considering they're closed on mondays I think that is fantastic service. Thank you Stan. As for the string picture well black has helped a little as I shot with it last night. Our hall is very poorly lit but im told that when going to competitions the halls are generally a lot lighter! Ill let you know what happens after our county camps this weekend. But ive now offered to clean all of the diffusers and fit more tubes in the lights in the hall if the electric circuit will take it!

That looks exactly like my case. The opinion is that of the officials and remains a matter of interpretation.

My "marking" was made with white dental floss" so I told the official that in case of problems it would take but a few seconds to remove it

And I was talking about recurve FITA, because compounds can have the peep sight on their string.

I am glad that my need for a string marking (or highlight) was just a temporary problem. I do no not need that anymore. It was psychological, I guess.
