I agree that it's difficult to draw comparisons between indoors and outdoors... I know of a gent who regularly shot 580 portsmouths, yet never made it beyond 1100 for a gents fita, and then there's me... I was shooting 530-550 portsmouths (so ok, but not great) and yet topped 1250 for a fita...

ok, so maybe ive done one york round

i have done one york round but i dont count it as one of my score's really , ive been shooting for 15 months started with a 34bs samickmaster/ winex limbs, and loved shooting outdoor but i could only reach 80yds with my sight in reverse , so there was a york comeing up and i wanted to shoot a gent's round not a girly round . i qwickly upgraded to a set of 42bs limbs turned them up and with my drawlenth was shooting 48bs , i thought it really cool shooting that kined of power being a novice BOY WAS I WRONG could hardly draw the bow , so managed to scrape 700 point's that day but i new judging buy the pain i was in i could shoot more if i was'nt so over bowed which is why i posted this thread to try and find out what could have been, just cant wait to shoot another one next year , would like to get one of those rose thingy's .

Enjoy your 570 it's a massive score!
Outdoors has different challenges but your form must be reasonable to shoot that kind of score indoors so the great oudoors should hold no worries.
Indoors and outdoor are hard to compare and you might find that you're even better at outdoors with the right setup
All the best

This proves that you have good basic technique, you know what your'e doing and your mental approach is right, so providing your gear is suitable for the long distances (more later) and providing the weather is kind, there is no reason why you shouldn't do well in a York. How long have you been shooting? I am surprised that someone who can get a 570 has not been shooting long enough to have done a York.
The two major differences between a York and Portsmouth are the extra demands made on the equipment for the long distances and then we have the weather to contend with. There is no easy solution to shooting in difficult conditions and personally I found this the hardest part of archery to come to grips with, practice, practice, practice is the only real answer.
Regarding your equipment. Indoors you can get away with shooting very modest gear with low draw weights, aluminium arrows etc. Outdoors, in my opinion, you're going to need at least a draw weight 'on the fingers' of 36lb and preferably somewhere around 40lb. You are also going to need carbon/ally arrows, ACC's are a starting point Navigators/Tripples are a better bet and ACE's better still.
Good luck!
im shooting triples now but i wont heaver pile's do you think i should do this or just get some ace's ,,,, are x10's really much better than the ace's

I know that I am a bit crap indoors - I get bored. If I'm shooting around 570 PM in competition I'm probably shooting 1080-1100 York on a nice calmish day. (X10s for both) For most people I would reckon 570 equates to mid 1000s.

As is clear from the thread YMMV

I agree that providing you can get the distance, heavier piles are a good thing. I shoot Aces with 120 grn piles and find that they drift far less in the wind than arrows with lighter piles. X10's are heavier and thinner than Aces so they drift even less in the wind. But they are hellish expensive and unless your'e shooting over 1250 Fita's (around 1120 York) then they aren't really cost effective unless you're very rich.

Can I add a category for shooting X10s? You have so much X10 hardware already and your ACE hardware is 14 years old and rusty it makes it cheaper to replace X10 shafts than buy ACE/McKinney II etc. Difference between ACE and X10 is ~ £40-50... don't think that puts too much petrol in the tank of an Aston

And at a drawlength over 31" nothing else (other than X10, ACE, McK2) is thin enough unless you're shooting heavier weights ie>45lb. Large spine Triples are VERY clunky on a recurve. Unless you don't shoot when it is windy and go to the pub instead

Tempting...
