Vanes / Fletchings advice

After a bit of advice (speculative though it will have to be) on vanes / fletchings.

I was using what I now think to be EP vanes (made of what feels a bit like rubber) these are 1 ¾”.

Swayed by the look of curled vanes and the fact that the top archers in my club all shoot them I decided to make the change.

I already had two packs of Kurly Vanes (1 ¾”) and so when my EP’s became damaged and I ran out of spares I ripped them off with great vigour then undertook what felt a bit like brain surgery to fix them on…at least until I got the hang of it.

Went to the club at the weekend and was totally shocked by the results.
Target at 100yrds, my sight markings changed – I was expecting them too, but not THAT much!

Sight had to come right the way in and right the way down – that is worse than my sight marks for my aluminium JAZZ arrows!!

I left thoroughly disheartened.

Now I cant shoot with these fletchings – so something learned at the very least I suppose.
But I noticed when we were adding their scored and retrieving mine from the green stuff that their fletchings (not Kurlys) are far far smaller.

The only other size I have seen is spinwings at 1 9/16” – is that really that much smaller?
Doesn’t look it on a ruler!

Should I try them or just go back to EP with my tail between my legs?

Are there ant curved type that dont cause quite a much drag?!!!

I think people are going to need to know how long your arrows are, jaarus...If they are quite short (like mine) you can get away with much smaller fletchings.

Also, have you checked clearance with the kurly vanes? You tend to need to rotate you nocks a little to avoid contact with the plunger.

In that case I'd say try the smaller spinwings, and check your clearance. I think I'm right in thinking that the different colours of spinwings have different amounts of "drag" - black being the least. I think white comes next. Sounds like you want as little drag as possible. Also make sure you are putting the fletches on straight - you can use them angled for more spin but that may also result in more drag and therefore lower sightmarks.

Clearance isnt a problem but they just ran out of steam as they reached the other end of the field using original sight marks due to exessive drag.

I definately need vanes with less drag!

* Am I right in thinking that 1 9/16" vanes are actually the small ones I have seen?
Just that on a ruler the difference is tiny - only about 5mm or so but I suppose the whole vane is smaller?

* Does anyone use them with a weight and drawlength similar to mine without problems at 100yrds/90m? I know the guys using them have a draw weight of about 45# compared to my 38# is that the problem?

Does anyone use curled vanes (spinwings, kurlys any other brand I dont know of) with a weight and drawlength similar to mine (38# on the fingers, 28" 610 Navs) without problems at 100yrds/90m?

If so which type / size etc?

I use 40mm Kurly`s on 27" ACC`s and other than aiming have no problems at 100yrds
i`ve tried QuickSpins and had problems with them causing too much drag
i would suggest sticking with the Kurly`s smallest (40mm) and ensuring they are on straight and no clearance issues
you shouldn`t really have any problems then

As an in-between of plastifletch and kurly, you could try the QuickSpin vanes here.

I haven't used them but I've heard good things! With a bit of tuning they might work.

I used to shoot plastifletch vanes, and i'm shooting Alternative Kurly Vanes... I havn't noticed a huge differance in the grouping or the hight of the arrows, but i know that kurlys take damage a lot less well than the plastifletchs... in the end its all archers preferance
