What is the best sight position?

Becuase my bow is not so strong I need to use my sight scale near to the bow (ie not extended out much) to get sufficient distance outdoors. I have tended to keep the sight in this position indoors too on the basis that the nearer the bow, the less it is cantilevered out from the bow and hence the "easier" it will be on the bow hand (arten olympic principle!).

But I can't help but notice that most archers I see have the sight fully extended so it is as far forward as possible. I assume this is to provide finer adjustement, but maybe there are other good reasons I am missing.

Are there any other compelling reasons for moving the sight far forward?
What do other users of AI do and why?

Becuase if not is it worthwhile chopping my sight arm down to save a little weight.

I leave my extension bar in the same place for indoors and outdoors.
The currect position allows for all distances ie.20 to 100 yrds and since it never moves position, it is consitiant.

its about half way in by the way.

personal preferance though really

I tend to leave the sight arm out as far as possible to give me finer adjustment... I've never been that bothered by the 'cantilever effect' having the sight bar fully extended has, although I have one of the aforementioned Arten Olympic sights, so maybe they actually do 'exactly what it says on the tin'!

I would, however, caution against chopping the back end of the sight arm, as, since it's part of the whole bow/arrow/archer system, it could throw your tuning out (it'll probably be a small effect on the system, but it's difficult to predict...)

I adjust the sight depending on the distance I am shooting.

All the way out for indoor, thus providing minute adjustments so that I can get the arrows exactly where I want them.

Then as far out as possible for outdoor depending on the distance.

Kae.

Bearing in mind I'm relatively new to archery, I keep my sight extended out as far as it will go for a couple of reasons:
  1. The weight of the sight isn't that much when compared to the forward weight introduced by the longrod (and doinker). If it's of concern, V-twins can be used to move the weight back.
  2. Keeping the sight arm at the same length between all shoots reduces complexity and the chances of confusing yourself (the KISS principle). I find there's enough potential for things to go wrong without adding to them.
  3. The closer the sight is to the target, the more accurate your aiming will be. Conversely, this will also make the sight picture move around more (but we're not talking about 2ft long sight arms here ).
It's the potential for accuracy and the reduced complexity of moving the sight arm that are my primary reasons.

The further out your sight pin/ring is the clearer it will appear when looking through it when keeping the target in focus, as you bring the pin closer to your eye it will become slightly fuzzier

This along with a less fine adjustment are the only down side to having a close pin. These on their own should not affect your scores. I suggest just leaving it where it is. If your happy with it then leave it.
