Buying on a budget

I've glossed over several threads and noted the general trend of 'try before you buy', etc but when it comes to 2nd hand I guess that isn't so easy...

Anyway...my bf has taken up archery again and needs to move up from a wooden bow with broken sight and sawn-to-fit limbs. However, to say his approach to kit is machiavellian would be an understatement - he preferred to shoot two 29" compound arrows and a 27" Jazz than wait for the nocks to dry on 3 other same length jazzes, and his quiver is a bread bag with poster tubes and a bag strap. <_<

I've bought him 32.5" Eclipses for his birthday so that part's sorted, but finding a bow that he likes and is within his budget is proving difficult.
  • He doesn't like the Agulla's weight.
  • A Hoyt Matrix riser on ebay was expensive at £99 (admittedly with 6 days left)
  • It must be 70".
  • And have a wooden grip at least ("ugh all that metal")

The thing is I know my Evo is very much a straight out of the beginner's course bow, (the Evo II is 23" anyway), and so I think he needs to go for a mid-range if he wants one to last him.

He's got £300 from family...but I doubt he wants to spend all of it.

So any advice on where to compromise/cut corners?
Is ebay really the best source for 2nd hand bows - or is he pushing his luck trying to find a 70" 2nd hand anyway?

Edit: Oh yeah...I've never even heard of this bow...is there a reason why? PSE Coyote

the KAP Winstar II option £299 for all new kit a bargain, I have shot high MB scores using a bow of this type belonging to a fellow club member.

Hmm, to clarify, it's not to go over £200.
When suggesting just a Winstar II with challengers for just under budget..."im sorry, i dont get how a small amount of magnesium alloy can cost that much and it doesn't even have a string"

This could be an uphill struggle....

Try looking in here Alternatives Bargain Basement for the price range your talking about perhaps the Winstars or Strikers will suit (scroll down they`re way down)there`s also a wide selection of discount limbs (Evolutions look to be the cheapest).

Heh, I just was looking at Alt...
Unfortunately evo limbs are non-international fitting, and don't go high enough.
Will probably be good for the handle tho, so thanks!
(As an aside...omg...a trigger handle...some guy took one to Lilleshall and his limbs bananaed. Everyone said it served him right! I wonder if it's the same one...)

Anyway I laid out from Alt's new stuff...
Cartel Fast String for 70in bow 18str - £5.36
KAP Winstar II riser RH Blue - £81.54
KAP Challenger CARBON limbs 70in 38lbs - £83.98
Cartel Triple Cushion Pressure Button Blue - £4.18
Arco Sport Spigarelli Magnetic Rest - Universal RH - £10.32
Bringing it up to £185.38 + p&p

Go for it! but make sure they set it up for you (I Doubt) Visit your local shop, have a chat, pick up different risers, ask them to put some limbs on "so you can have a feel" talk to them, take their advice, go home happy!! Don't buy mail order unless you are dead certain you know what you need!

E-bay is rarely a good idea for bows from some of the stories you hear about such as limbs covered in scratches and things.

Cartel is always a great idea for budget accessories.

One suitable list could be
Cartel Midi Extension Sight for £4.99
Cartel bow stand for £8.08
W&W WinStar 2 riser for £85.00
W&W Challenger limbs for £64.99
Hoyt Super pro rest for £1.20
String Flex string in Dyneema, Fast Flight or 8125 for £7.50
Negrini economy case for £18.49

This should be a suitable start for 190.25 +p&p online from BowSports http://www.bowsports.com
The riser is 25" so the long limbs will make a 70" bow. The strings are available to the required length and number of strands. Material is pretty much your own preference.

Also, around this time of year you can pick up discontinued items or last years model for less than the latest model. It's basically the same, but a slightly different paint scheme usually.
