Question Grip mods.

Hi,

I've struggled for a while with the grip on my hoyt, it just feels too low for me and I'm not confident I'm getting a consistent hand position. Are there any decent grips on the market that I can try before I buy or is it a case of building it up with that putty stuff or tape and padding.
I've heard mention of marking the top of the grip near the shelf and then a corresponding mark on the bow hand to make sure you line them up each time, has anyone tried it?

Cheers,

Beats

Ed Eliason did that, but got the line tattooed on the back of his hand so it didn't move about between shoots.

There aren't really any try before you buy aftermarket grips on the market, most are a custom job. Just break out the putty (Milliput is good and a model shop will usually sell you enough for three or four grips for a fiver) and have a go! If you don't like the result, cut it off and start again, or buy a new grip - you can get a standard Hoyt grip for a tenner if you really screw up.

My grip is made out of a slice of garden hose and multiple layers of racquet tape. It feels good but looks crap. I'm tempted (now I know what I want) to attack my wooden grip with the sander to get the same feel & a better look- the tape picks up muck & I always think a good looking bow makes you shoot better.

Who cares about looks? If it works that's good. My Merlin has sidewall rubber (Tyres) covered with water buffalo skin. (I used to work in the remould industry) The grip is skinny but it suites me down to the ground. A lot of people say they don't like it, but HEY, who did I make it for?

Add some car body filler to raise the grip if you wish, then file/scrape/sand to your desired shape.

For a good shape, see if you can get a hold of an old Yamaha grip, or better still, a Loesch grip to use as a template.

All you want is a grip which encourages the bow to leave your hand directly to the target, and also which encourages a consistent position.

Thanks guys/gals, I used what was laying around at home last night. Spray glue and soft leather offcuts left over from doing the car interior, feels nice, very nice, sexy even! lol. Can't wait to see how it shoots.

For anyone out there with a Merlin recurve handle I can recommend Merlins custom wood grips, made to measure for £18!

Just wondered - is there a degree of conformity to grips, ie is the part of the riser they attach to a standard size? Or, as I suspect, are they all different? If the latter does anyone know if a company like Merlin would make one custom fit both the bow and the archer?
