Brace height

Yes another brace height question but this is more specific.

Now I shoot a 25" Helix with 70" Winnex limbs. they are 44# with 46 on fingers at around 29"draw. I use 18 strand fastflight useing 500 x10's with 120grn Tugsten points. The BH is about 10". I have about 3/4 inch of the limb groves showing under the string. The setup produces 196fps. Does the BH seem high to anyone? I know another Helix 70" archer has his at 9 1/2". Does anyone think the BH should be lower? I will try and test this tomorrow night over the club but would like some opinions and other data first.

Initially that sounds very high, but with myself just acquiring the Nexus using the throat of handle to bow string adds at least 3/8"+ to the brace height over the Matrix and Ex-feel and retaining the same amount of string groove shown from behind the string. Measured from the pressure button the height sounds less dramatic but I still think 3/4" of groove is excessive, every set up I've owned seems to have ran best with a gap between the bottom of the string groove and the bow string of no more than 1/4"

As a guide Hoyt suggest between 22-24cm measured from throat of handle for 70" bow.

22-24cm = 8 3/4-9 1/2 so yes the bracing height does sound a bit high. but on the other hand the bow should be a lot slower and more forgiving. it depends on how you feel with it at the moment. i used to have too many twists in the string and my brace height was bigger than the book said but i liked to shoot it that way. i changed it to get a better cast and now its more reliable at disance. the best advice i could give you is try it the other way (9 1'2) and see what you think but bear in mind your nocking point will change.

i had a play around with the brace height on my bow for a couple of nights until i foudn the sweet spot. with Winstar2 and Winex limbs as well, brace height is 9 1/8" from the throat of the grip. sounds clean, nice and snappy. regarding the string groove you can see about 1/4" of it.

This is a misconception the nocking point does not move higher or lower depending on the BH because the limbs bend proportionally when you add or remove twists.

If your bracing height is too high (outside the suggested range) then you will stop the limb working efficiently to it's full potential this might be a factor in reaching 90m. If too low you risk damaging the limbs because they can bend backwards too far.

I think what Pancake was suggesting is that when you run with an increased brace height the angle at which the arrow detaches from the string is reduced somewhat, yes relative to location between limb tips the nocking point will remain the same, but as that nocking point moves back and forth the angle of the arrow alters around it's "pivot point" on the rest unless the arrow is set exactly perpendicular to the string.

for example hold a pen or pencil loosely between the first joint of your right hand index finger and the thumb, place your left hand index finger on a table and rest the end of the pencil on it, slowly push the pencil forward keeping the tip of your R/H index finger on the surface of the table as you do so, result:- the tip of the pencil drops down toward the table top, it's not just gravity its geometry.
