Cresting

Anybody know when cresting came in? I have seen feather splicing going back to the 14th century but cresting is proving illusive, so far with an admitably short search I can only find examples from early 19th century, nothing earlier.

At a guess when archery was introduced as a "sport". When used as a war weapon when arrows were supplied by the cartload there wouldn't be much point.

Might have been done for keeping score...

archery was always used to hunt as well and I have come across references of medieval hunting arrows with peacock fletchings tied on with coloured silks and crested, used by nobility....don't see why the practice couldn't be older.

Coloured silks seem to have been used for cresting, might even be easier than painting.
