... well there's interesting! Sadly not true, but close. You're referring to males who used to have to self catheterise because of some urethral obstruction, for example an urethral stricture, or possibly those of us who se advancing years result in enlarged and obstructive prostate glands. It is true some patients were known to keep their catheters in their hatbands, when hats were popular and prostatectomies uncommon. Some patients still have to dilate their urethral strictures .... wheeeeeeee!

The "keep it under your hat" phrase comes from keeping your second string dry as the old flaxen strings for longbows either snapped or stretched in the wet. One had a second string to ones bow ...
