Question Archery phrases

OK - here's one to get this section started. How many 'commonly used' modern day phrases, have their origins in archery? e.g. "add another string to your bow" ..........actually, that's the only one I can think of at the moment

Can anyone think of anymore?

You could also have " keep it under your hat" or "point blank"
or a modern more would be "When do you think your g3's will delam?"

We have a special one at OUCofA - "Surprise!": the bowel churning realisation that something has gone badlywrong and pain is about to happen. As in "Surprise! You are airborne with no bike helmet!". Comes from the tendency of the renowned surprise limbs to delaminate at random: "Surprise! Your face has gone. "

How about "parting shot" ? the origins lay in horse archery as the horse archer rode by enmies firing the last shot almost behind them was called the parthian shot you see the conection

"Playing fast and loose" (when something is on or off, depending on the mood)

"Flirting" (as when the tail of an arrow flicks from side to side as it heads for the target)

"Rule of thumb" (various definitions, but the way fistmele is measured on a longbow - clenched fist with thumb raised)

"drawing the longbow" (bragging)
