strathclyde uni - and inter uni stuff

since no one actually reads the student page (iv been watching the "views" counter for a few days and it aint moved!) i thought i might stick this stuff in here!

im shooting with strathclyde vs every other uni in scotland with an archery club, outdoors in edinburgh at herriot watt (i think) on saturday coming. not sure what kind of round it is but im not looking forward to sighting during the competition since iv never shot outdoors before.

and some older posts:

26/3/06
just back from the big scottish university indoors that included strathclyde, dundee, st andrews, robert gordons (aberdeen area), napier (edinburgh area) herriot watt (edinburgh area) and edinburgh uni (shooting at home).

strathclyde came 6th out of 7.
edinburgh came first and won just about all the prizes. i think we are a little bitter about them having a permanent range, big budget with alloy riser club bows and good coaching/they know what they are doing.

i shot a 492. would have been over 500 if we had been allowed a break but i got the shakes and was really hungry by the end. my first 3 dozen were around 105 each.

the backstop netting was comicaly rubbish: low poundage recurve arrows went straight through it, every time. it was similar to bed sheet cotton.

somehow i lost the padlock off my case. it was on it when i left the shoot, then 10pints of lager seemed to remove it somehow? i didnt take it off so i think it must have just fallen off. quality lock from the pound shop i guess.

20/4/06
for the aberdeen shoot we are all shooting at home and sending the scores off. big event for strathclyde is tomorrow afternoon at our normal practice.

(i got 501 for the above, my first 500+ since before xmas. i could regularly do it before xmas)

we have a scottish leaugue that seems to work quite well. shoot every 3 or 4 weeks roughly, mostly with 2 away teams shooting at a match. then there is the big indoors and an outdoors where everyone shoots to wrap up the season. we generally come last but we seem to have more fun and seem to have the most diverse club.

just back from the outdoors. shot an Albion 80-60-50.

us strathclydeians came last (we think - there were many problems scoring due to people not filling in what discipline they were shooting) as usual. edinburgh kicked everyones asses as usual e.g. for the novice teams, 2nd position got 850 as a team, edinburgh got 2100. you can sorta tell they have a coach!

my first outdoor shoot. was fun getting sight marks(!) strong wind from the right that varied in strength and direction untill it was blowing towards the targets. also had hot and sunny spells, cold overcast spells and persistant light rain for a while.

i broke a knock by shooting it through the targets number board, completely destroying it in the process aswell. i lost an arrow, then found it again when i missed on a later end and it landed 1" from it and i hadnt seen it before because it had its fletching burried under a tuffet - i'm a very consistant misser it would seem.

i now have sight marks for outdoor shoots: 80yrd is sight pin on the very bottom of the sight and aim at the top edge of the boss, 60yrd is at 65 on the shight scale and 50 is a bit above that.

i scored 452 with 5 zone scoring which i thought wasnt too shabby given the first 9arrows on 80 and 60yrd were mostly misses and the wind was being a whore. but my groupings obviously sucked. kinda have to work on that. think a new sight pin might be worthwhile as about the only piece of hardware that'll make a decent difference. if only bowsports sold aerosol skill to spray on hands before competitions.

a good day anyway, i look forward to my next opportunity to shoot outdoors or at long range....i need to find a friendly farmer..

Yep, exams are b******s. I'm just squeezing in practice around revision, but it gets tough this week, so i doubt i'll get any in at all. Edinburgh's novices got 2100? And at the begining of the season too. I think the only chance anyone's gonna have against them at BUSA is to have a few good female novices who get to shoot the windsor. Unfortunatley we have no female novices at all.....

Ah well, will have to go for individual glory then

i think edinburgh did so well partly because there were so many female novices and other unis came along with only part teams, like the strath novice team consisted of me and Zach.

we only get to practice on friday afternoons anyway and i dont ahve a boss in my flat (yet) - no permanent range and no coaches! so revision isnt too much of a problem but the sports hall being used for exams is. plus the building we kept our stuff in at the outdoor range burnt down so shooting outdoors requires van rental etc so just doesn't happen.

yeh watch out for edinburgh and dundee at BUSA, they have decent clubs and facilities. at the meeting yesterday BUSA was brought up and we were all told to go. strathclyde might have 2 or 3 token people going along for the banter mostly, i might be among them. we probaby wont get a chance to shoot atall before then because of the hall being used for exams.

^pretty sure there are 5 of us strathclydians going to BUSA outdoors. we'll be the hungover ones with cool team T-shirts laughing at how bad we are compared to everyone else...oh and slagging edinburgh off for being better than us.

had an inter uni competition in dundee yesterday. was a fun social shoot and BBQ to finish off the year. it was called the 2nd anual grrrrudge match but none of us really had any grudges.

we weere shooting on the dundee sports field which is at the end of dundee airports runway....we were shooting about 200m from the end of the runway. if any pilots came on a lower approach than they were meant to, which was about all of them, we could have hit them if we tried . apparently on club nights in the past they have been asked to move further away by the airport guys.

we had a very VERY strong cross wind. in the gusts the arrows were blowing off my rest and that was with a magnetic clicker. im considering getting a spring clicker for windy shoots. other than that the weather was excelent: only one short shower and decent sunny spells. i managed to get sunburn on the backs of my hands haha!

round was a windsor for all. i found it much nicer to shoot than the albion at my first outdoor a few weeks ago which was just a silly range for novices in a cross wind. yesterday i scored 599. top recurve was a dundee novice with 610. strathclyde came last, beaten by dundee by 1 point.
