Longbow Length - How is it worked out

I am about to start making a longbow for my son and am wondering how longbow length is determined. Is it similar to the method used for recurve i.e. drawlenghth plus 40 inches ?

About your height + 2", which is longer than drawlength + 40".

I am sure that there are people more knowlagable about longbow than me, but a 68" longbow with a 28" draw is too short.

Typically 6ft long.

6ft might be a bit long for a seven year old, but height plas 2 inches sounds quite reasonable.

It is easier to make a longer bow for a short draw, than it is to make a short bow for a short draw.

I don't know how much experience you've had at making longbows, but in my experience, it is best to over-estimate than under estimate.

If you make the bow too long with imperfections, then it won't break with a short draw length. Imperfections are a lot less forgiving when the bow is drawn to its full length.

The expression "The Rule of Thumb" comes from bowmaking. An archer would typically select a bow that was his height plus a thumb which is about an inch or two so your sons height plus a few inches sounds like a good place to start.

Yep, height plus a couple of inches is about right, though depending on how old your son is you might want to make it a bit longer if he is still growing
