tab/glove

I've seen a few traditional archers shoot using a glove instead of a tab, is there any reason why this would be better than a tab? Or is there no difference?

Gloves are not any better than a tab - just personal preference. I think trad archers should definitely give both a serious try. I started with a glove and could not get on with a tab until my form improved. Now I love my cordovan tabs and a glove just feels too bulky.

I've been using a leather glove. The leather is really nice and soft and fits my fingers well, so I don't feel impeded at all. I certainly found the glove easier/nicer to use compared with a tab on a quick trial of both.

I've tried some other gloves and as Macbow says, they can feel really bulky. However, I'm finding that the glove doesn't provide enough thickness to protect my delicate fingers, and I'm starting to get the odd blister/flaking skin. I think the problem may be worse now that it's warmer and my fingers get hot inside the glove.

I'm now thinking I ought to give a tab a good trialling, and have been wondering about giving OldBloke's Oberon stuff a go.

A tab is faster than a glove.

A glove does not give as clean a release as a tab either.

I don't agree.
Three separate pieces of material, three separate points of contact with the string will never release as cleanly as a tab!

A tab is effectivley one piece of material. The entirety of it moves away from the string in one motion (with obvious imperfections if imperfect loose).
A glove is three pieces of material, all of which can move in different ways and will not be as clean.

Kae.

My personal preference is now the Wilson tabs Black Widow, naff name but the tab works well for me. I did give the Oberon stuff a go, re-facing an old Cavalier copy my daughter had discarded but can't get on with it. Not sure if it's the material or the style of tab.

Absolutely.

I have tried both, I got on well with a Howard Hill style re-enforced tab, but didn't notice it wearing out until it was too late to get a replacement as they have been discontinued. Other gloves tended to crease and grip the string too much. I use a kant pinch tab, which is better than any glove.
When coaching longbow archers, the first thing I do is try to get them to change the glove for a tab. Without exception, every longbowman who I've had do this have seen an increase in scores.

Daniel

I use a black widow. It was too thick when I started using it, so I ripped the middle layer out. It made a big diffrence but it's still a bit bulky. I might be converting to a glove, but I'm not shure.....
