Fletcher's workshop

Was having a chat with a builder and he told me about a house he had renovated, it was old and he was stripping off Victorian plaster when he came across rows of small holes going right through the very thick walls to the outside, they weren't ventilation holes and on making enquiries was told that the building had been a Fletcher's workshop. The holes were for straightening shafts, they were heated and then pushed through the holes eventually coming out straight. There were, on the outside of the house the remains of lots of small pegs where the shafts were stored. Unfortunately the wife was present during the conversation so practical experiments are out of the question, as I was told as soon as the chap had gone that I was NOT to start drilling holes in the wall!

Sorry no pix, and no more info, would have liked more myself, but we were just chatting at a reenactment bash.
