So how do you measure it - the nocks don't seem to come in standard sizes. I have three different 9/32" nocks and they are all different tightness on the string.
One from intersport is perfect, but have to travel 98 miles to buy them, the others by post from Quicks are far too tight and the third from Decathlon seem to be in between. Do you order them in String strand numbers or something ?

Sometimes - you may already know this - even with the correct string for the bow nocks don't always suit. Trust I've made hundreds of arrows and strings.

I agree with you on not gripping the string with pliers, because it will be incinsistant and may cause damage to the string under the serving which will go unseen.

As for filing the nocks - Whats the problem, we shoot traditional bows in this forum, no olympic dangly bits so filing the nocks as long as it is done so by somebody who knows what they are doing there isn't a problem.

Karen my suggestion would be to use 'classic' nocks. Just ask what ever supplier you want to use and ask specifically for 'classic' nocks they tend to be loser on the string and will probably rectify your problem. I haven't got any 9/32 nocks in stock at the moment, but I would gladly help you sort out your problem. I will private message my archery shop email address if you would like me to and I can advise you from there. Please bear in mind I only deal with traditional archery products.

As for super glue on your nocks don't worry. I personally don't use super glue on my nocks I use softer glues but getting your nocks off won't be a problem.

Also what type of bow are you shooting? What poundgae? And how many strands does your current string have?

Don't be tempted to 'crimp, crush, file, heat, bite or otherwise make the nock fit the string as this will weaken it and may cause it to fail the next time it's under you chin (or eye). Buy the correct nock by discussing it with a supplier or go along the shooting line at your club and see what fits, then buy some of that type,But PLEASE don't alter nocks to fit you string as it may result in serious injury to you or others on the line.
All the best

Calm your passion BE!!!

If you do anything to alter the nock to fit, you may end up with every nock different and therefor altering each shot before you get anywhere near the target!

As BE says, it is better and advisable to have the string made and have the nock there to check the fit..... that's how mine are done at Aard's

Karen, if you are using a longbow with wooden arrows then taking a little but off the inside of your nock will not hurt - especially if you are currently using 'plastinocks' as they have two very small pieces of plastic that the string has to pass by before reaching the bottom of the throat of the nock. By removing these 2 bits your nocks won't be as tight coming off.

However if you are using a recurve or compound bow then don't alter your nocks just get the right string and nocks that work together

Karen - if you are using traditional wood arrows I have 9/32 nocks in a couple of makes (AAE 'Z' nocks and Bohning 'Legend' nocks) Both of these have a loose throat to them which may suit your needs. You can see the AAE Z nocks on my site The Longbow Shop - traditional longbow arrows and archery supplies. If you want give me a shout via PM with your address and I'll happily send a couple of samples out to see if they are any good for you before you buy

Cheers

Jason

Many thanks for all your advice and kind offers - My string is a 16 strand fast flight with wooden arrows - 9/32 nocks.

Maybe there is a scale of sizes somewhere for the nocks / string size or strand numbers - or does everyone have to buy a lot of different ones and experiment until they find one that fits and then stick to it because its a problem to change everything !

Maybe theres an opportunity here for some farseeing entrepreneur to make some sort of range of nocks that enables you to know what size is needed for particular string types/strand numbers and to be able to go simply up or down the range to change anything.

I don't have an archery store within 100 miles and so have to rely on mail order or visits occasionally to the uk - I don't have anybody to make strings for me to fit specific nocks.

So maybe the answer is that I must learn to do it myself - but as I only use about 4 strings a year it hardly seems worth it !

I just bought a dozen woodies made up (yeah too lazy to make my own) and the nocks are a wee bit tight on my dacron string for my AFB. Think I am going to try Robs idea with the sandpaper, very gently....
